Steemit Open Mic Week 101: I'd Like to Know (Meg Hutchinson cover)

in #openmic7 years ago

Meg Hutchinson is without a doubt both my favorite songwriter and the most important musician to my life. I don't think it's out of line to say that I owe who I am today to her album The Living Side showing up in my life at exactly the right time. If you're having a hard time, it is an amazing thing to have on your side.

She also was kind enough to model for The Reader after a concert in Red Wing a few years ago, which was pretty awesome. This remains one of my favorite ones from that series.

So it's a little bit of a surprise that I've gotten this far into Open Mic without ever covering one of her songs. This isn't my favorite song of hers to hear, or my favorite to play, but it was the one that grabbed me tonight, and even being somewhat down the list it's still pretty great.

Whatever's been going on with my voice, where it's at right now is that I can sing just fine as long as I'm not trying to do it while playing the guitar at the same time. So I'm experimenting with recording multiple tracks here, and I think it went pretty well for a first time. Anyway, on to the video:

Lyrics:

I’d like to know someone
Who’s known months without sun
I’d like to know someone
Who’s learned how to sleep
When the night’s still bright

I’d like to know someone
Who comes from the mountains
Like a wall against my waves
I’d like to know someone
Who knows the quiet time
After the song is sung

Cause I’m quick to love
Quicker to tire
I’m looking for a slower burn
A better kind of fire

I’d like to know someone
With music in her lungs
I’d like to know someone
Who lets stuff off the hook
Throws back the little ones

Cause I’m quick to love
Quicker to tire
I’m looking for a slower burn
A better kind of fire

And when you’re not afraid to stay
I won’t be afraid of morning
And when you’re not afraid to say
I’ll never be afraid, to listen

I’d like to know someone
Who knows I came undone once
I’d like to know someone
Who knows deep where she comes from

Cause I’m quick to love
Quicker to tire
I’m looking for a slower burn
A better kind of fire

Cause I’m quick to love
Quicker to tire
I’m looking for a slower burn
A better kind of fire

(I changed the genders up from Meg's version, and whether I do that varies from song to song.)
