Steemit Open Mic Week 67 - Super Mario Brothers Theme Song on the DRUMS!

in #openmic7 years ago (edited)

It's a-me, @steemmatt!

Here's my drum cover of Super Mario Brothers for Open Mic Week 67. FYI, there's a light intro for 18 seconds before the full song starts. I tried to upload it on dtube several times, but it wouldn't work. Ironically, I saw that openmic isn't accepting dtube entries anymore, so it was a blessing in disguise.

I chose this song to try to connect with more people, since drums alone don't seem to be nearly as popular as guitar/keys with vocals. While there's a balance to strike, I figure that a smarter song choice can help me gain some ground or views.

Aside from 30 minutes of rushed messing around last week, I've never actually played this song before today. I spent a few hours on the set this afternoon coming up with whatever felt appropriate for the music without overpowering it. My neighbors were in the way for a few days, so my prep was listening to the song beforehand to visualize what'd I play to hit the ground running when I had my chance to jam. I may dabble more in video game theme songs since they often don't have acoustic drums, and evoke good memories. Hopefully this can hang with all of the talented vocalists and musicians. Fingers crossed.

I was originally going to cover The Legend Of Zelda's main theme song, but thought this would be more fun for now. (dibs - openmic crew!!)

In hindsight, I should've put some question marks on the exposed bricks in my apartment...

Headphones or speakers with good bass recommended to hear everything properly. I tried to balance out the levels on the module, so hopefully it sounds better than before.

Lastly, It might not look like it since I'm so focused when playing, but I put a hell of a lot of effort and thought into my drum videos when I learn these songs from scratch, and rush to get a solid enough track to submit in small windows when both neighbors are gone. Having to finish before they're back ruins some of the fun while playing, and adds pressure to play conservatively to secure a submission.

Let's-a go! Enjoy.

Follow me for more drum videos on dtube once I figure out how to upload smoothly. Troubleshooting advice is welcome.

You got the drum chops, my friend. That was SO COOL and old school.

Thanks a lot, good Sir.

Finally got to check out this video, it’s freaking awsome!
Damn, your forearms! I can see the results of those reps.

this is so awesome!!!

Hahah I busted up laughing at your introduction! Can’t listen now, but can’t wait to later tonight!!

We now have the special bond of both doing Super Mario Brothers for open mic at some point. 😂

OMG I just listened and this is seriously amazing!! You nailed it! I foresee some open mic winnings in your future.

Thanks a lot. I struggled loading this on dtube. The only thing I can think of was that that I had 5 tags, so I needed 4 to save room for the dtube tag. Other than that, it was spinning and spinning for 5 upload tries. Seemed to follow all of the simple setup steps, so curious if you ever run into this...

Perhaps we should revisit your flute and my drums for a Zelda or other video game duo, oh dtube master-ress of voice, split screens, and costume! See my comment to your bf below for a bad laugh.

Hahah I bet your cat was pretty stoked. I would LOVE to do some kind of collab for Zelda... I would just need to send you an audio file right?

As for dtube... I was actually just typing up something on that because I noticed your dtube comment at the end.

Honestly... it can be a little finicky. Sometimes I’ll get an error and then come back 20 minutes later and it is fine. Sometimes it seems to stall out a bit if the video file is too large... so I usually do 720p instead of a higher resolution and that seems to work better.

I’ve also heard that there are settings you can change in your computer to allow IPFS which makes dtube work better. I honestly have no idea what that even means though... maybe google it. haha

I have also found .MOV files work better than mp4.

Hope something in here helps!

Awesome. It was just a 64 MB Quicktime file (.mov), so maybe it's the IPSF thing. I'll try to post another this week to experiment with.

For collab, all I need is an MP3 file to be able to return a .MOV file via dropbox with our audio and my video. You could then add your video and art to it since I'm a novice in that dept.

This site is amazing and where I'll be getting a bunch of my tracks from. All free to download. https://downloads.khinsider.com/. Lots to choose from to merge our powers like Captain Planet... and even maybe your bf's guitar. (https://downloads.khinsider.com/game-soundtracks/album/legend-of-zelda-series-for-guitar/01%2520-%2520Title%2520Theme%2520%2528The%2520Legend%2520of%2520Zelda%2529.mp3)

It might be better if I sent the drum video to you to play over/split, but we could experiment. I just need everything perfectly locked in time since a half beat off can derail me. I'm willing to wear a themed shirt, but I can't wear leaves, deal??

No crop top and leaves?? hahah

I think having you do the drums first is a great idea!! That way I can split the videos and do the cover art. Also, that way you can record against a backtrack that will be perfectly in time. I’ll just need to find sheet music in the same key as the track... but I’ll work on that. That site you linked to looks really awesome, I’ll have to poke around on there more!

So I’m STILL not on Steemit chat... but I’ll set that up tonight! That way we can dive into more of the logistics without clogging up your post. Haha

"Here we go!!" - mattcoin8 is my ID there since I didn't know what I was doing when I signed up. It doesn't have to be that track, so feel free to offer any idea, and I'll let you know if I can play to it.

Deal!! I’ll look for some track/sheet music combos too. I’ll report back when I’m finally setup on chat. 😊

@steemmatt @coruscate, I don't mean to intrude.. Zelda as in Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask by any chance?

I've been considering for about 10 years, to buy a recorder flute and learn to play all the songs from those games really, really well. I've never actually done it of course, I don't even own a recorder.

But I just decided that I will buy one tomorrow, because they're very cheap and why not. I will try to get in a little practice every day, and we shall see how well it goes in a months time. I also happen to have access to professional recording equipment, and have experience with music production in general. IF you're interested, of course.

In the meantime, I'm looking forward to see and hear your duo! Very cool project.

I'd be a fool to turn down collaboration. I was specifically speaking to the main theme song in the hyperlink. I'm not sure if that aligns with either of those, or just encompasses all.

Yes, if you've been dragging your feet for 10 years, you're not required per a "smart contract" on this blockchain to get one tomorrow!

Certainly, I was planning to do it nonetheless. It's been at the front of my consciousness since before christmas, and your conversation finally tipped me over.

Bad ass!

Loved every second of this.

Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed. As a funny side story, I guess I was a little tired from playing today since I accidentally passed out in my bed after with my dinner unfinished (by me), finished by my cat.

Happy belated birthday.

Haha, did you make him/her wear the inflatable unicorn hat of shame?

Thanks for the bday wishes, I'm looking forward to the zelda collab you guys are planning!

Yes!! You've got some serious skills at this. Even at the dungeon-theme part (at around 2:05) with the uneven rhythm (my favorite part). Highly appreciated.

Thanks a lot! I can play the entire song blindfolded, EXCEPT that part. I can't tell you how many times I messed that part up by having my timing off on starting the second round of the "dunna's". This take wasn't perfect, but I was so fed up from screwing that part up, so I told myself it was good enough to post and move on before I hate Mario. I'm very glad you liked it.

okay that was just awesome!!! really cool

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed.

Dang, Matt. You are real good. I enjoyed this.

Glad you listened. Thanks a lot. See, I'm not just good at making bad jokes!!!

Rather creative selection and performance thereof, Matt!

so great!

Thank you very much for listening.

I hope you win a place! I am also participating, but I´m not that good haha
