Openmic week 74 original song "Big Time"

in #openmic6 years ago (edited)

Back in 1977, my band was playing at a club called Kenny’s on Bleeker Street in NYC. On that night, NYC experienced a complete black out due to loss of power. There were a lot of thugs out taking advantage of the situation, but in the midst of it some children came into the club and placed flowers and candles on the tables and we were able to finish the gig acoustically. I wrote the song Big Time as a remembrance of it.

The following information is from an article by NATE SCHWEBER.Bleeker Steet sign.jpg SEPT. 30, 2012 in the New York Times. I urge you, if interested to pull it up on the net, and learn about this fantastic old iconic club now closed in New York.

What distinguished Kenny’s Castaways from many other dusty and dim New York music clubs was the sign under which thousands of musicians passed on their way to the small stage at the end of the long room of brick and wood.
“Through these portals walk the famous,” reads the purple neon beacon, hanging three feet below the 120-year-old pressed-tin roof.
For 36 years, those who were famous or, much more likely, hoping to become that way filled Kenny’s cavernous interior with their sounds. But early Tuesday the club, on Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, will go silent, becoming the latest in a lengthening list of Manhattan music sites to close because of rising costs, and dwindling audiences.

Big Time

They brought flowers to the tables
Candles for the light
Gentleness and kindness,
They were workers for the light...workers for the light.

It was hot in New york City
All day and through the night.
We were playing down a Kenny's,
Everything had to be just right...

Philip poured the whiskey,
McGuin Hid at the bar,
Every one was thirsty
In the pavement and the tar.

I remember feeling nervous
Playng down on Bleeker street,
People there were famous
Better than the likes of me...
Our band was surely ready,
Played New Jersey for a year,
Honky tonks and dance halls,
Ten thousand beers...

And it was fine so fine,
Made it to the big time.

They brought flowers for the tables
Candles for the light,
Genleness and kindness.
They were workers for the light
Workers for the light.

Then without warning
Like a thief in the night,
We were standing in the darkness
And the stillness of the night.

Con Ed had lost it's power,
Blew the circuits out.
the darkness and the silence
Inviting fear and doubt.
We needed solution for our big event,
My van was still running
So I went and started it,
Made it to the loft,
Got accoustic instruments,
We'd play that gig no matter
If it was appocolipse.

And it was fine, so fine,
Made it to the big time.x2

Confusion fear and evil
Seemed to be on every hand
Looters thugs and crimnals
Taking what they can

When the chldren came with floweres
And candles in their hand,
Lighting up the room
And the hearts of Every one.

And it was fine so fine,
Made it to the big time
Yes the children brought the flowers
And candles for the light,

They brought the big time,
They brought the light.
They brought the light x4

Good one Daddio!

Thanks Lauren! You have been sharing some great stories and pictures that are interesting and give some of us a way to see places we may never have opportunity to see otherwise.

Beautiful song! I'll always remember my Dad helped get the power back on, as he was District Plant Manager of Manhattan Bell Telephone! 😍

Thank you. You have heard these songs so often, I'm so glad you still like them! I wish you had been there, but it was a very dangerous nite in NYC.

I like it.

Wonderful storytelling style and lyrics of a historic moment. Your deep low vocals add a nice subtle serious and guiding tone to your well selected guitar chords, I loved that you rhymed instruments with apocalypse. Keep it up!
