Songwriters Challenge Week 1 - My Top 5 Entries
What a fantastic first week for the songwriters challenge. I have to say that I have a newfound respect for the Open Mic judges, to say that being a open mic judge is hard is probably the biggest understatement ever said by a living Steemian.
I must admit that I had my doubts the first day. How many people will actually enter? Was it too early in our community to give this a go? But after seeing and listening all the entries that came in the past few days, I’ve not only been smiling like a chubby kid inside a bakery, but I've been so inspired I want to write more songs myself. (maybe I will... maybe I will!)
As you can probably imagine, narrowing this down to five entries was hard.... way to hard, there are so many good songs that it almost feels like I'm committing a crime by making a post about 5 of them, but that is the mission I signed up for and here it goes, in no particular order.
What can I say about her entry…. Ten seconds into the song I was completely engulfed in emotion. @Melavie is an artist that any music lover should follow, her natural ability to touch a listener's heart is not easy to put into words for this mere mortal.
I’m still trying to recover from the power of this line.
“we'll find beauty in the pieces
When we recognize our face”
This song speaks to me so much… I feel like she hacked into my feelings and downloaded some of my emotional files, she could be a hacker... she could be, someone should look into this.
This song has been stuck on my head for two days now. @Onetruebrother has a natural ability to write great originals, it seems effortless for this man. Subtle Elements of folk, and that retro sound that seems to call me home is the general soundscape I perceive in his composition.
This is a powerful song about self identity, the eternal search for one’s true self and it has a super catchy chorus that simple won’t leave my head. Much respect brother, much respect...
A versatile talent of the open mic family and a great songwriter in his own right. Jaybird’s song lives in the realm of the “hits” the chorus is so catchy, It took only one listen for me to want to sing along.
If I could describe the songwriting style, it reminds me of a power rock ballad from the good old days, and even though I may sound like I’m getting old, they don't make rock ballads like the used to... except for this one, this one rocked hard.
Three seconds into his video I was laughing like someone who had lost his mind with artificial chemicals. Basil is a natural performer, and one of the most creative Steemian Urchin on the blockchain(as he puts it). His approach on this song was of course completely different from what I expected.
His songwriting reminds me a lot of Tim Minchin who I'm a big fan of. Don't let the rest of the day go by without listening to Basil's entry, I promise you will be get a kick out of it too.
I fully expected a track with this energy to make it into this week’s songs. Aside from the great playing the song is super catchy and it’s got all the rock n roll attitude one needs to take a long drive above the speed limit.
I hope @guitarlots inspires more guitarists to jump into the contest next week, this song is a freaking hit!
Honorable mentions in no specific order: @lk666 @geenaizzy @g10a @muphy @luisferchav @cabelindsay @paulhallman @limabeing
A giant thanks to everyone who has embraced this challenge, like I've said many times before the idea of this competition is for us to strengthen our community, learn more about each other, and share our passion for creating music. It's important to know that there are no losers in my book, we all win... I win the opportunity to listen to great music from musicians I respect and admire, and for that I'm very grateful.
The theme for next week will be announced tomorrow with @luzcypher 's weekly post, so stay tuned for that. If you are just bumping into this challenge let me invite you to join us for week 2 starting Nov 29, 2017. @passion-ground @krystle and myself can't wait to hear what you have to share with us.
Did you know @krystle and @isaria are hosting a Open Mic show on Sundays?
As our community of musician grows more and more initiatives are being born. In what will be the fourth show @krytle and @isaria will be sharing Open Mic entries this coming Sunday Dec 3, 2017. It would be amazing to see you all there.
I will include a link MSP Waves on this post, in hopes that you join us on Discord and and ride the MSP Waves with us this coming Sunday.
I'll sign off for now... thank you for being part of the songwriters challenge and Steem!
Since these emotional files are not saved on a server, but are decentralized floating trough space I must have used one of our common ones to create that song @meno. I guess if you had these files popping up on your emotional screen we hacked each other properly. :)
Thank you so much for providing that very first inspirational file to write that one. And your words. i'm a very humble hacker right now.
You have most definitely hacked into my heart and soul.
Ahhhmmsaaii gahddd 😭😭😭😭😭😭 its everyone. But its also your voice. N your guitar n that candle. Everything. The damn video iseverything
WOW Meno I am SO honoured! I have been loving hearing ALL the entries, this competition makes the listening even more inspiring and intriguing because of how FRESH the creativity is. It HAS to be! I would NOT want to be in your place having to judge this, but you've given me a major glow inside putting me in this top 5 :) massive love and keep up the awesome work.... I think you may just have started something LEGENDARY
Dude, I feel traces of monte python in your hilarious style !
Pretty well written song btw, love the high notes & the piano playing.
You're probably one of the only entries that managed to not go all dark and stormy in mood. Loved it!
haha I know right? I guess a broken mirror is a pretty dark image..... I mean, I TRIED to get cheery but the themes are still robbery, assault, bad luck and imprisonment..... I guess there was no getting away from it! I think we all did an awesome job, the quality of the submissions was astounding given the time they had to be written in. This competition is clearly a GEM
Sick entries, those first two were really well written and executed!
Basil's was just freakin' hilarious, he's got a great comedic songwriting style, pulled off the performance well IMO!
Guitar lots brought the energy for sure and also brought a quasi - Tom Waits style which i dug! Right on everybody.
Pretty good turnout too for the first week.
Did we all call our song "Broken Mirror(s)" except for like 2 ppl hahaha
I'm definitely working on my song title for next week!
Great post, picks, and write-ups, brother! It is a pleasure to serve with you in this most awesome contest you're sponsoring... Much love, man...

Thanks so much man...it may come off as effortless but for me it's more like sending out a prayer and hoping for an answer; always surprised and grateful for inspiration and that people can connect to it...peace
viewed, voted, commented, and re-steemed ...
anyone follows me i'll follow back within a few days
I would have said the same to u on my post earlier, but i have already advice six of you calibers, was already exhausted,, it won't get u anywhere bruv,,, check my reputation man u see right, im only 2months here, i worked for it not for the gain, or fame or this that, but for the love and growth of this awesome community, for our future benefits. Learn brah, learn
hey Rudy, i can see that you are new to Steem, so let me give you some advice... commenting like this won't get you far, as you can see from your reputation score it has actually hurt you.
Try to engage with sincerity, unless you are the fastest reader in the world, there is absolutely no way you read the post, what is worse is that you make the same comment on everyone. So there is a big chance Steemcleaners will kill your account, and I'm sure that is not what you want.
i appreciate the concern but i'm not as new as you might think, i know perfectly well how steem works, i get this kind of response all the time, so much i keep a post around to explain why i dont spend more than five minutes a day anymore :
here :
https://steemit.com/steemit/@rudyardcatling/so-for-all-the-people-who-would-reply-why-i-only-reply-like-that-in-case-i-havent-replied
despite all that "how not to do it" my rep got back up in less than a month from 15 to 27 (and it was wrecked that same day by the same fascist 1% dictators down to 15) and i went from 10 followers to 107 so i reach ten times more with my re-steems (but it gets me nothing due to the stalkers)
good luck with it, steemit , the way it is as an exact copy of crumbsucking from the rich society and not saying what you want out of fear to be cast out is not worth more than that to me however, but it might be to others :)
I see you are new here. Welcome to Steemit.
Asking people to follow you on Steemit is not the right approach to having a successful account.
It is much better to create good content so they want to follow you.
This may help and I also suggest you read Steemit etiquette before you hurt your reputation.
There are a lot of people new to Steemit that think having a lot of followers is the path to making money here but not if you ask people to follow you to follow them.
Still don't believe me? Then read this
thanks for the consideration but im way too not new to anything to be mislead ... i get this reply a lot so i keep a post around on why :
https://steemit.com/steemit/@rudyardcatling/so-for-all-the-people-who-would-reply-why-i-only-reply-like-that-in-case-i-havent-replied
imo a re-steem is always good ... despite all only a handful of people out of tens of thousands actually complain. I had 10 followers now i have 107, so my five re-steems a day have 107 chances of being re-resteemed ... and more is better, other than that steemit isnt worth more than five minutes a day. Anyone who doesnt like me can do like me : i dont downvote ... i mute, if you dont wanna see or hear or read me : mute me, simple as that.
Until steemit has a block button so it allows smaller diverse communities within a bigger world it will be at the mercy of the 1% just like "real life" until then i'm just keeping an eye on it and my re-steems might get people a few cents. Thats all there is to it
but thanks for the concern :)
you can check out all my rambling through my website if you like, i got plenty to say, all my profiles are listed there. But not here, where i'm moderated down to posting opinion that's approved by the ministry of information and appeals to the common denominator.
That said, i wish you good luck in your efforts
Thank you @meno!
Fantastic choices and great performances everyone! I can hardly wait to see what more they come up with in week 2.
OpenMic Songwriters Challenge Week 2 is out and the theme is:
