Steemit Open Mic 51: matt sokol - relaxing on pins and needles (SPLITSCREEN4)

in #openmic8 years ago (edited)

Finally getting back into the Splitscreen vid groove with this new song. I don't have my drums set up yet, but why let that get in the way?

I am a firm believer in making music with whatever tools I have available. It's always a good time to make music. This one was inspired by those classical guitar vids from @oliverwaterman - he got me wanting to try and write something in that vein, utilizing some contrapuntal melodic movement and intricate chords.

I'll be honest, recording this song was fucking intense. I got SO MAD because I could. not. make it sound right. I remember trying to record some of these themes a few months ago and giving up, this time I had to get it.

There's a lot going on here... it doesn't sound technical, but it's strangely difficult. Here's a glance at some of the sheet music to give you an idea of the intricacies of the tune:

Towards the end of the recording process I was FUMING, and then finally, with all of the intensity of the energy in my head, I managed to convey it via my guitars and get this thing down.

I feel better now, if a bit tired:

...sometimes you just gotta push through and get the song down, no matter what.

Splitscreen vids take a long time, but they are so worth it. More of these coming soon... and until then, I look forward to listening through as many of the Open Mic submissions as I can in the next few days. Open mic is huge now, and that is awesome. Cheers, pals.

p.s. - wanna see it on sheet music? here's the Guitar Pro file for this song: http://bit.ly/sokol-splitscreen4

Yo Matt. I lvoe this piece. I took your sheet music and did a version for 2 violins. A few of the notes were lower than the violin range so I bumped them up an octave. I hope you enjoy :)

Great effort, Matt! Glad you stuck to it - to get it done... Can't wait for the drums to return-

you and me both man, drums are gonna be so nice!! thanks for checking it out @passion-ground

I love how you edited the video as well and the song sounds great. It sounds clean and simple but I guess simplest things come from the most intricate work! Hope you got some rest afterwards.

Thanks a lot @mintvilla, I appreciate you taking the time to listen. I did finally get some rest, in fact all day today I've been eating junk food and relaxing :-D

Man I miss playing the drums, i still play alone once a month on my fathers electric drum set. I been in two serious bands in my middle 20s, played some awesome shows. Good memories, wish i can do it all over again.

I do remember how difficult what you did here is. It makes me tired just thinking about it.....You made it sound easy, though...Well done!

Love this Matt. I know the feeling about doing take after take. Last week I did a piece for Steemit which took 54 takes. Hard to keep the momentum up after so many.

Awesome tune , I found about this after going backwards from the buckydurddle version. I like this intricate stuff as it is the complete opposite of what I am doing at the moment but always keen to try do stuff like this. Having an affinity for jazz helps and having done a jazz drumming course for a year helps. I hope we get to do something at some point.

I like it. Melodic, lightly harmonized, and just a little disconcerting. Glad you followed through!
