Open Mic 39 - "4 marzo 1943"

in #openmic7 years ago

This is a famous Italian song written by Lucio Dalla and Paola Pallottino. The original title was "Gesù Bambino", but later became "4 marzo 1943" because of the Catholic censorship.

At the time - 1943 - when the story narrated by the song is set, Italy was in the middle of the Second World War. It is about a baby that born from the love of an Italian young girl and a soldier "that came from the sea and spoke another language" - probably a soldier from US or from the allied countries.
The baby was loved by her mother, who gave him the name of our Lord, and grew up in the harbor until her mother died.

The song closes with:

Anche oggi che gioco a carte e bevo vino,
per la gente del porto io sono Gesù Bambino

That means:

Even now when I play cards and drink wine
I'm Baby Jesus for the people at the harbor
