Celebrities and crypto — how are they connected?

in #openledger5 years ago

Every single day digital currency becomes more and more popular than the traditional one. There are no billion-dollar ad campaigns that you would see on TV and billboards for now. However, there’s an enormous number of celebrities who are not only promoting but also actively supporting, investing in and even developing crypto! So who are the crypto celebrities we should watch out for? Let’s take a look at the top ten we picked.

#1. Lionel Messi

Football superstar Lionel Messi has become a global brand ambassador for Sirin Labs, the developer of the world’s first blockchain-based secure smartphone for the masses, the Finney phone. He’s actively supporting blockchain, recognizing its true world-changing potential. Being not only one of the most famous football players, but also one of the most famous people in the world, his 90 million social media followers are also turning the heads to blockchain and crypto.

#2. Luis Suarez

One of world’s best strikers who plays for FC Barcelona and Uruguay’s national football teams, Suarez knows that simply being paid for scoring goals is not enough.

Make money by predicting who wins is much better! By doing just this, Uruguayan football star invited 25 million of his Instagram followers to join him in signing up for the Ethereum-based prediction market platform Stox so they can make predictions for the US Open.

#3. Floyd Mayweather

Additionally to promoting Stox, Floyd “Crypto” Mayweather also hyped up the ICO of a blockchain-based content marketplace, Hubii Network. Mayweather made the announcement just before his historic fight with Conor McGregor. Right afterward, he supported the third ICO, too! Sharing his thoughts with 13 million of Facebook, 19 million of Instagram and 8 million of his Twitter followers certainly gained even more support for crypto.

#4. Ashton Kutcher

Known as a big tech celebrity investor, Hollywood actor Ashton Kutcher is also a huge blockchain fan. How huge, you ask? Well, let’s just say he tweeted about Ethereum back in 2014. He’s an investor in the cryptocurrency exchange, BitBay, and his firm Sound Ventures is backing Unikrn, an eSports betting digital platform. Getting him on board in any role is success by definition. With 18 million of fans on Facebook, 2,5 million of followers on Instagram and 19 million on Twitter, he has a lot of power for spreading the word!

#5. Redfoo

Days of Redfoo ‘party-rocking in the house’ are behind, as now he is a coder working on an Ethereum project! The musician is deeply involved with blockchain and has also donated several personal items for TokenStars Crypto Christmas Charity Auction.

#6. Winklevoss twins

After being ‘defeated’ by Mark Zuckerberg in stealing the Facebook idea, the twins have fully regained the high ground, publicly announcing themselves as the world’s first Bitcoin billionaires in 2017. Their relationship with crypto goes all the way back to the times when it still cost almost nothing. Among their achievements is the attempt to register a bitcoin-based exchange-traded fund, investments in a bitcoin payment processor, and the founding of Gemini, a digital currency exchange. Their $11 million bitcoin investment officially turned into $1 billion, and made the headlines.

#7. Akon

According to the statement of The United Nations, rapper Akon’s first charity project Akon Lighting Africa is “the perfect case study” of how their Sustainable Energy for All initiative might succeed. With the help of Akon’s project, the United Nations was able to build 100,000 solar street lamps and 1,200 micro solar grids.

Akon didn’t stop there, later announcing a new crypto he calls AKoin. The major goal of AKoin is to build a new city in Senegal, called Akon Crypto City, described as “real-life Wakanda” on the AKoin official website.

#8. Gwyneth Paltrow

Following her appearance on Apple’s reality TV show Planet of the Apps, one of the world’s most famous actresses teamed up with crypto wallet app Abra and joined the board as an advisor. According to the Abra founder, Paltrow provided them with a huge business and connections network, while also offering a valuable business advice and sharing her insights on building a successful consumer platform with hundreds of thousands of paying customers.

#9. Donald Glover / Childish Gambino

Glover, better known as Childish Gambino, was one of the first celebrities to advocate the use of Bitcoin. Going back to 2013, in his interview with Time, he stated that he believes in digital currency more than he does in ‘traditional’ money, as being “backed by gold seems very old and nostalgic.”

#10. Prince Felix of Luxembourg

Royal families don’t like to be left out of the action. TaTaTu, Blockchain startup aimed to compete with YouTube and Netflix, has generated buzz in the cryptocurrency community when it managed to raise $575 million through an ICO. It actually wasn’t a surprise – among notable public figures helping with the fundraising effort was Prince Felix himself!
