Entry for Onstellar Contest- Haunted House
This is something that happened to me somewhere about 28 years ago, I was just 28 years old then and was in those days staying in Olanchito which is a medium sized town in north eastern Honduras.
Well I have a friend who lives in a very nice house which is famous because everyone in town says it is haunted, it belonged to what I believe would be a great grand aunt of his, it has a great location as it is right in the city center close to the park and Catholic church.
It turns out that one day he had to make a trip to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, and he couldn’t think of anything else than asking me if I could sleep over at his house to keep an eye on things. Naturally I didn’t want to, but I could not come up with a good excuse for not doing it, so I had to agree to stay there for the night.
The house is apparently, in no way frightening, it is not even too old, and it has all modern commodities, still I was very wary when I turned in for the night, I tried to stay awake for as long as I could, watching TV, looking at all the books he had there, which were a lot, but eventually I fell asleep.
And sure enough, just as I feared, at around 2:00 am I woke up with a start and I knew there was somebody in that room, I looked and there was a long haired woman right by the door watching me, so I did what any brave person would do, I closed my eyes and hoped for the best. But no, I wasn’t lucky, I felt somebody sit on the bed and put their elbow right on my stomach.
I couldn’t breathe, I wanted to run, I wanted to scream and I couldn’t, but still I wouldn’t open my eyes because I’m not an idiot. Eventually I felt that presence go away, I was relieved but I couldn’t get the courage to get up, but finally I did and with my eyes closed I turned on the lights, this was most fortunate because just a few years back electricity was just available until 11:00 pm.
Funny how when there is light you look at things differently, I was laughing at myself for being such a coward and figured what I had gone through was a nightmare. Anyway after that fright I had to go to the bathroom, and just for cautions sake I went with my eyes closed as all the lights were turned off except in the bedroom I was using, and I kept them closed until I knew I was in the bathroom and was able to turn on the bathroom’s light, you know you can’t be too careful.
Well I left the bathroom, but as I am quite smart I decided to leave the lights on, in case I had to go there again, I was a Boy Scout when I was a kid and I know you always have to be prepared.
Now I have to explain something about that house, I was sleeping in a room that is at the end of a long hall that begins at the living room, I had to pass in front of the bathroom to get to my room, also that house has some acoustical oddity in that when somebody walks on the sidewalk it sounds like they are walking in the hallway.
So it was around a quarter to six, the sun was already up, and I was woken by people who were going to their chores but I thought they were walking in the hallway, so I got up and decided to go the bathroom.
That’s when I was sure that house is haunted, the bathroom’s light was turned off and the living room’s light was on. I grabbed my clothes and my shoes and just got out of there still putting my pants on. I mean that was proof, I never turned the living room’s light on.
I ran all the way home, once there I phoned my friend and told him what he could do with his house, that is definitely one place I am never going to sleep in again.
This my entry for the ONSTELLAR Contest
