Some Outrageous Filipino Superstitions That I Can Still Remember Up To Now

Superstition is a derogatory term for any belief or practice that is considered irrational. If we look at it, it seems that it is something that has no connection at all between the action and the result.

I mean when you did something wrong as what the elderly believe (as an act that comes with consequences) something bad or unusual thing will happen. But still, it is being followed and observed by most of the Filipinos around especially those who are still living in the Philippines.

I can’t deny that even in this day and age, at times we Filipinos still adheres to what our forefathers believed I am even amazed at what intelligent people (professionals at that) passionately believe of something that can never be true in the first place. Just because Lola said or Lolo told me about it so I should believe it, who would want to argue with that? Our Lolos and Lola’s were the source of those superstitious beliefs.

Anyway here are some of those outrageous superstitions, things that my forefathers told me when I was still a kid that are still in my mind up to now although, honestly I’m not following them 100% this time.

1. Do not sweep dirt out a door in the evening or before sunrise

People believe that doing this will cause you bad luck. Others think that doing this will sweep out the money made that day.

Truly the act itself doesn’t have a strong connection with the believed outcome but a lot of people will say that there’s nothing to lose so why not just follow what the elders are telling us?

How about you do you consider this belief?

2. Cutting nails in the evening

Many people believe that cutting nails in the evening is not good as it also may cause bad luck or may awaken night spirits.

Who still cut their nails at night? Are you not afraid some spirits might come and attack you?

3. When three people pose for a picture, the one in the middle will be the first to die

This particular belief remains in me for quite some time but learned to forget about it as time goes by. There were even times wherein when it happens or when there’s a need to have a photo of the three of you, everyone is anxious about being the one in the middle.

Have you heard about this?

4. One who pays his debts at night will become poor.

Haha I still remember my late mom will never pay someone coming to collect payments of some debts at night, even if she has the money. And yet we remain poor, LOL. Kidding aside I still see a lot of Filipinos who adhere to this belief. Sometimes made me think that might be just their alibi because we cannot deny the fact that there are really people who don’t want to pay, or maybe they do want to pay but sooner or some other time.

How about you, do you see people who believe in this up to this time?

So where did our forefathers get those superstitious beliefs?

Historians generally agree that the Negritos, the Indonesians and the Malays including the Indians are the biggest influences of Filipino superstitions which also includes the Chinese and Spanish. If we still remember in our History class, our country has a lot of visitors from other places this is because of our strategic location in Asia, certainly these people would also bring with them their own atypical beliefs and pass it on to our forefathers, and this is the reason why we Filipinos have so many superstitious belief even today.

Some interesting belief I just knew:

If a fishbone gets stuck in your throat, don’t tell anyone. Instead, spin your plate three times to make it disappear.

I experienced having a fishbone stuck in my throat but didn’t know about this trick, LOL I think I have to try it sometime.

If the number of letters in the husband and wife’s name adds up to 30 or more, then that means good luck.

This got me count the numbers of letters me and my wife’s name has in total, unfortunately fall short, but I still consider it good luck, haha.

So for those married couple out there why not count the letters of your name and your spouse and leave it in the comment box below? I just wanna know if the result means good luck, LOL.

Do not sweep dirt out a door in the evening or before sunrise

I think I know of a culture, a people that have these same notion too in East Africa.

Halaaa, as in? In.anaon ra diay na ug mabukog? Haha :D

Did you notice that in tall buildings there is no 13th floor? After the 12th the next is 14th already. This is because of the superstition that the number 13 is bad luck.

I have heard of most of these except for the fish bone getting stuck. The old folks say you have a suhi (someone born with the feet coming out first instead of the head) touch the throat and the fishbone will be dislodged.

Jejeje aw suhi ko pwd koi hire ninyo

He he. Pila pud imu charge?

Libre man ko manghilot jeje pero dri sa Saudi 100 riyal ila bayad oi...
