Photos for the long weekend, #282-285, รูปภาพสำหรับวันสุดสัปดาห์, the OPED project.

This post will consist of photos taken during the last long weekend I spent in Nongkhai.

The train arrived more than half an hour late on Friday morning and I didn't leave Nongkhai till the following Monday afternoon. So, the photos will be mostly about the cats, river and sunsets, trees and nature surrounding my garden.

282/365, It is still possible to live without electricity and running water in Nongkhai.

These surroundings never stop to amaze me of the hidden vitality and essence of living on earth, being grounded and connected to mother nature and be contented with what she gives. This was a break from the madding crowd for me, the change of scenery and energy does help to keep me living a healthy life.

As soon as I arrived, the ginger mother cat recognised my voice while I was talking to the driver, she came running to see me and followed me around. Friday afternoon was a very wet day suitable for sleeping. The cats found some dry spot to sleep and watch the falling rain. They were expecting some grilled fish from me but I couldn’t find any at my friends’ food stall in town. But I gave them milk instead and they seemed quite satisfied so they stopped complaining.

283/365, Saturday was for walking along the river, inspecting the construction of riverside road, and watching the sunset.

The construction of the riverside road along the Mae Khong river has been extended to the next village in the south. The excuse has been for the purposes of tourism but the road actually prevents local villagers from planting their crops on the land right by the road. This is because the road is abiut six meters higher than their land which makes it impossible for them to make use of the river for water their vegetables. During this season, the sunset starts around 7 pm., the day is two to three hours longer than in winter months. We could see the long range of mountains in Loas only in summer months; I guess it has something to do with the wind which blow off all the clouds making the sky very clear for a few months.

284/365, Someone has been eating all the leaves of my plants.

IMG_9641.jpg

Initially, I thought the heavy rain has made the roots of the plants going bad that's why all the green leaves have almost gone. Suddenly, my gardener was shouting for me to have a good look at the plants. I saw a few fat green caterpillars munching away at the green leaves. Then she showed me a plastic bag with over fifty green caterpillars inside! We have been rather careless and couldn't save the plants much sooner. Those small birds in the garden could not swallow such big pieces of lunch either. There are several coucals or crow pheasants in the back of our garden. But they could not eat all the caterpilars. So, I asked my gardener to release these super size caterpillars around the river bank. Some will probably survive awhile some would be eaten by birds along the river.

285/365, The cats slept a lot and got bored and started a fight.

IMG_9637.jpg

Sunday was a perfect day for sleeping and being lazy. The three cats were very closed to each other and they kept licking each other quite often. They liked to sleep in a pack, although Jilly would be the last to join the rest as she now has four kittens and has become an adult cat with a more matured attitude. On the other hand, the ginger cat and her daughter, Rosie, could be found side by side and they often played like children. I liked watching when these two cats having a wrestling match. They were both incredibly fast in their reflexes. Lately, they seemed to use more force while playing and their faces became quite angry. I hope that these three cats would always be close to each other.

286/365, We have grilled fresh fish for lunch with papaya salad and lots of vegetables.

IMG_9680.jpg

My gardener managed to buy two fresh fish from the local fisherman, so we decided to have a charcoal grilled fish, the other fish would be put in the freezer. The menu is made with local and home grown vegetables. The main salad dish is made from raw papaya called papaya salad or som-tum in Thai. We have several ingredients for eating with the grilled fish, these would be diced into small poeces, such as tomato, raw banana (with the raw skin intact), sliced lemon grass and galangal, green brinjal. We would put a small piece of fish onto a large betal leaf, then add all the sliced ingredients then roll the leaf with all the filling for bite size. The taste was amazing, betal leaf would be a bit hot while the sliced lemon grass gave a hint of lemon scent. The raw banana also gave a deeper taste of tanin just like in red wine. This experiment was very successful, but next time I would add sea food sauce and sliced pieces of lemon.

Yummy!!!.... I often eat Pla Tap Tim,aroy mak. What is this fish Pla Nin? It is from the Mae nam Khong? Sure you have a good dinner @kaminchan.
Have a nice time along the Mekhong :)

Pla Tap Tim cannot beat this fresh water fish! You have got to try this fresh fish!
I prefer this to raw fish!

Cheers.

Your cats are so beautiful and healthy looking, especially compared with the way they looked when you first found them! The fish looks so delicious, I wish I could have some right now!!! Have you seen the kittens yet? Are they all ginger again?

You'll have plenty when you are in Nongkhai.
I haven't seen those kittens yet. But my gardener said: one white, three ginger kittens.
I know the culprit! It's nearby neaighbour's new sort of white Persian cat! Not a pure breed, but look very much like Persian cat!

My cats are always running around the garden and climbing trees!

They had fish, they had too much food.
Now they are fat and need some exercises.

Great photos!
Cats are beauties!
I have not seen such large caterpillars yet!
You fed them very much :-)))!
They should be on a diet.
Lovely dinner.
Have a great weekend!

Thank you!! The birds could not swollow the caterpillars because they are too big!

Cheers.
