If you are new to Excel, you will soon realize that Excel is not just a grid to include numbers in columns or rows. Yes, Excel can not only be used to find the total of columns or rows of numbers, but can also be used to calculate mortgage payments, solve mathematical problems and techniques, or find the best troubleshooting based on the number of variables entered.

Excel does it using formulas in cells. The formula performs calculations or other actions on the data in the worksheet. The formula always starts with a sign equal to (=), which can be followed by numbers, mathematical operators (such as + or - for addition or subtraction), and the default Excel function to optimize the formula.

For example, the following formula multiplies 2 by 3 then adds 5 to the result of the multiplication to produce an answer, 11.

= 2 * 3 + 5

Here are some additional examples that you can include in the worksheet.

  1. = A1 + A2 + A3 Adds values in cells A1, A2, and A3.

  2. = SUM (A1: A10) Use the SUM function to return the number of values in A1 through A10.

  3. = TODAY () Returns the current date.

  4. = UPPER ("hello") Converts the text "hello" to "HELLO" using UPPER function.

  5. = IF (A1> 0) Use the IF function to test cell A1 to determine if the cell contains a value greater than 0.

part of the excel formula

The formula can also contain any or all of the following: functions, references, operators, and constants.

(The parts of the formula)

  1. Function: The function PI () returns the pi value: 3.142 ...
  2. Reference: A2 returns a value in cell A2.
  3. Constants: The value of numbers or text entered directly into formulas, such as 2.
  4. Operator: Operator ^ (inserts) picks up numbers, and operator * (asterisk) multiplies numbers.

Uses functions and functions that are stacked in Excel formulas

Function is a predefined formula, running a calculation using a certain value called an argument, in a particular structure or arrangement. Functions can be used to perform simple or complex calculations. You can find all the Excel functions on the Formulas tab in the Ribbon:

(Excel function syntax)

Examples of ROUND functions that round numbers in cell A10 below illustrate function syntax.

  1. Structure. The function structure starts with an equal sign (=), followed by a function name, parenthesis, arguments for comma-separated functions, and parentheses.
  2. Function name. For a list of available functions, click the cell and press SHIFT + F3, which will launch the Insert Function dialog.

  1. Arguments. Arguments can be numbers, text, logical values like TRUE or FALSE, array, wrong values like # N / A, or cell references. The argument you specified should generate a valid value for the argument. Arguments can also be constants, formulas, or other functions.

  2. Tipalat argument. Tipsalat with syntax and arguments will appear as you type function. For example, type = ROUND (and tipsalat will appear. Tipalat only appears for the default function.
Note: You do not have to type functions in uppercase, such as = ROUND, because Excel will automatically write function names in uppercase after pressing enter. If you misspell the function name, such as = SUME (A1: A10) instead = SUM (A1: A10), Excel will return an error #NAME ?.

(Incorporate Excel function)

When creating a formula that contains a function, you can use the Insert Function dialog box to help enter the worksheet function. When selecting a function from the Insert Function dialog, Excel will launch a function guide that displays the function name, any arguments, function descriptions and any arguments, current function results, and the overall result of the current formula.

To make it easy for you to create and edit formulas and reduce typing and syntax errors, use Automatic Formulas Complete. After typing = (equal sign) and the initial letter of the function, Excel will display a dynamic drop-down list of functions, arguments and names corresponding to that letter. You can then select a formula from the drop-down list, and Excel will enter it.

(Stacking Excel functions)

In certain cases, you may need to use the function as one of the other function arguments. The following formula, for example, uses the stacked AVERAGE function and compares the results with a value of 50.

  1. AVERAGE and SUM functions are stacked inside the IF function.

Valid results When the stacked function is used as an argument, the stacked function must generate the same type value as the argument used. For example, if the argument returns a TRUE or FALSE value, the stacked function must generate a TRUE or FALSE value. If the function does not display the same value, Excel displays the error value #VALUE !.
Stack level bounds The formula can contain up to seven stacked function levels. When one function (we will call this function B) is used as an argument in another function (we will call this function A), function B acts as a second-level function. For example, the AVERAGE function and the SUM function are second level functions if used as arguments of the IF function. Functions that are stacked inside the stacked AVERAGE function are a level three function, and so on.
