A distinguished Japanese author who passed away this week, elaborated a rather complex and nuanced in its comprehension of human psyche style of writing. Something that differentiates him from other magnificent Japanese writers like Kobo Abe, Kawabata or my esthetically beloved Mishima. This profundity of reflections stems from the exclusive teacher of it - from the long-lasting and arduouse experience of personal suffering that Oe Kenzaburo had and that coupled with his omniscient mind and humility of acceptance produced his works. Among them are the plethora of reflections around technological innovations - some infused into his novels ( nuclear energy in "The Pinch Runner Memorandum"), some are expressed in the essays like the one below.

The article is a particular gem of thoughts around the altering of the language and questions of commodification of ideas and communication that the Internet brings through the lenses from 1998. Yet, about modernity, it alludes to a contemporary debate about the influence of new media and language use ( now into NLP debate? ChatGPT?) on broad social themes. Timely encounter as I have recently finished Juli Zeh' Zwischen Welten' where the plot develops around emails and WhatsApp messaging.
