Know about Dead Zones

in #ocean7 years ago

There are “dead zones” in oceans around the world. Dead zones are mainly a consequence of human pollution. Pollution robs water of its oxygen. These low-oxygen regions are called dead zones.

Scientists have been studying dead zones for decades. But recent research has revealed a gaping hole in the records. The tropics likely have 10x more dead zones than reported.

Before, dead zones were thought to dominate temperate areas. Now, the newly-discovered tropical dead zones pose a major threat. In 2011, scientists witnessed a massive coral die-off in the Caribbean. Usually, warmer, more acidic waters cause this type of destruction.

The scientists noticed it wasn’t just the coral that was dying off. Crabs, sea urchins, and sponges were also dying. However, corals in shallow waters were healthy. Only deeper waters posed a threat to life.

The scientists discovered the deep waters were a dead zone. They concluded that it’s not just the Caribbean.Dead zones could be ravaging the tropics worldwide.

The good news? You can reduce dead zones by controlling sewage and agricultural runoff.

Thanks, @sophial. With all the focus on global warming (arguing over man made vs natural, etc.), I think simple conservation and preservation of our environment suffers.

We CAN do something about water and air pollution NOW. My feeling is that this is our best hope at preserving life on this planet.

Upvoted and I follow. Cheers!
