The beauty of history

Hello to all dear friends and welcome back to my blog.

Today I speak of one of my lessons in the classroom of art history where I treated a part of Roman architecture, and in this case the aqueducts of the Empire.

So I decided to share with you a watercolor painting that I made together with my students.

The civil construction built by the ancient Romans is fascinating.

I share some beautiful photographs of Roman aqueducts from all over Europe and my paintings.

For this reason I want to quote you a phrase by the famous Greek philosopher and historian Dionysius of Halicarnassus which reads: "The extraordinary greatness of the Roman Empire manifests itself first of all in three things: the aqueducts, the cobbled streets and the construction of the sewers".

Aqueducts over 2000 years old that are fully functional and that the Romans built in much of Europe.

By means of the use of the round arch the Romans managed to build huge structures carrying water, even on several levels of arches.

Aqueducts hundreds of kilometers long that cross slopes and rivers, sometimes enter tunnels dug by Roman workers.

I want to clarify that the determining factor for the transport of water is gravity, that is, the water is moved by slope.

The aqueducts all have a slight downward slope that makes the water move.

La bellezza della storia

Ciao a tutti cari amici e ben tornati sul mio blog.

Oggi parlo di una mia lezione in aula di storia dell'arte dove ho trattato una parte di architettura romana, e nella fattispecie gli acquedotti dell'Impero.

Così ho deciso di condividere con voi un dipinto ad acquarello che ho realizzato insieme ai miei allievi.

Condivido alcune bellissime fotografie di acquedotti romani di mezza Europa e dei miei dipinti.
L'edilizia civile costruita dagli antichi romani è affascinante.

Per questo motivo voglio citarvi una frase del celebre filosofo e storico greco Dionigi di Alicarnasso che recita:"La straordinaria grandezza dell'Impero Romano si manifesta prima di tutto in tre cose: gli acquedotti, le strade lastricate e la costruzione delle fognature".

Acquedotti di oltre 2000 anni che sono perfettamente funzionanti e che i romani hanno costruito in gran parte dell'Europa.

I romani appresero dagli etruschi l'uso della tecnologia costruttiva dell'arco e della volta e la svilupparono per tutta l'edilizia civile. anfiteatri, ponti, teatri, terme e acquedotti.

Per mezzo dell'uso dell'arco a tutto sesto i romani riuscirono ad edificare enormi strutture portatrici di acqua, anche a più livelli di arcate.

Acquedotti di lunghezza di centinaia di chilometri che superano le pendenze e i fiumi, alcune volte entrano in gallerie scavate da operai romani.

Voglio precisare che il fattore determinante per il trasporto dell'acqua, è la gravità, cioè l'acqua viene spostata per pendenza.

Gli acquedotti hanno tutti una leggera pendenza verso il basso che fa muovere l'acqua.

La tubazione è posta in alto alle arcate in modo da poter avere più altezza per la pendenza di spostamento dell'acqua.

Genialità costruttive per l'epoca!

Acquedotti millenari che ancora oggi servono città di milioni di abitanti come ad esempio Roma.

Inutile dire che il fascino di questi acquedotti ha coinvolto centinaia di artisti in viaggio in Italia, ma anche in Francia e in Spagna.
