Ceaușescu in the air #1: Abandoned in time of peace

Yesterday I took my SPARK out for a spin in spite of the wind howling in the dusk.

As I have aquired the drone not long time ago, I decided to make today it’s first real flight as up until now I drove it only directly from the iPhone.
Today I tooke her out for a spin using the remote. I have to say that the little bee is handling very well even in pretty strong winds. The gymbal is the only one affected but not in a very strong way.

I drove a Phantom 4 before, which is a prey bird comparred to the Spark but it’s fixed size and it’s weight makes it very hard to transport; especially when you are a mountain bike and snowboard lover :)

The millitary unit I photographed today used to be one of the many specialised units we had during the Cold War. This was a radiolocation unit that used to serve the missile basis around it. It is very close to my hometown, Ploiești, an oil rich area, with extraction and reffineries, that even the USA bombed during World War II; Hitler was sucking oil from here to fund his advance for two of the three big chunks of his army. All the area was heavily millitarised ever since, until 1989. It is said that one of the reffineries was surrounded with a railway and equipped with special AA guns on trains. When the American bombers were approaching l, the Nazis were jumping in these trains, uncovered the AA guns and rain hell on the bombers while moving around so they would be hard to hit.

The former millitary base is now used mainly for airsoft games. There’s a huge community that gathers often here to play. There are sometimes more than 100 souls shooting each other with plastic pellets, all full battle equipped; in a way this is a simillar goal to the one they had before, for the buildings.

Unfortunatelly this is one the many abandoned buildings we have in Romania and as time goes by I’m sure I’ll be able to post more.
