Informed Misinformation

Too often we as Intelligent beings search out information, about everything from recipes to historical confirmation of our personal religious beliefs. All the while internalizing what we have decided is the truth., the best, and/or the most lucrative. Ironically, we also must at some point take a leap of faith, decide that a bit obscurity is completely adequate, deciding that this eventuality HAS to lead to fact. After all, an educated guest at its very best is still just a guess, right?

Now while you are still reeling that in, consider also that every piece of information you receive outside your own head is geared, equipped, charged to get a specific reaction, or is at least designed to repel you from a specific group of conclusions. What am I talking about? Well consider something you have decided recently, what drove you to your conclusion? What outside research was presented? Where was it from, who gave it to you? What was the agendas at work when that information was collected….

So, what leads you, guides you, helps you decide what is for you and what isn’t? Is it you, or everything around you? Did you choose to read this, or did I make that decision for you by way of the title, or my name, or my reputation?

My point is quite simple, consider what society is trying to implicate in the messages sent to us every day. Consider the commercials you see on television, consider the information broadcasted on the radio, consider and contemplate everything that you consume. For instance, I am a brown skinned American and yesterday was thanksgiving here in the US. Thanksgiving is the holiday the country has set aside to celebrate the hospitality and resources shared with the first settlers. This aid from the Native Americans, allowed the settlers to make it through the harsh winter in a new place. What the Native Americans did was share both resources and knowledge which eventually lead to a hostile takeover over their native land. Now in 2017 we present thanksgiving as a day of thanks, we teach our children to remember the things that they are thankful for on this day, as if it were ok to not be grateful the rest of the year.

Without getting lost in any rabbit trails, just consider that last part a minute. There is a national holiday which is observed by virtually everyone in the US to celebrate a kindness that was ultimately exploited… However, threw re-branding and objective reinforcement we have completely shelved the truth of that situation for a redundant cozy replacement… How about the media industry here in the US…? Consider the innuendoes in a commercial… consider the underlining message of the cast of the latest remake of Annie… Consider the cartoon Curious George that is supposed to be a cartoon modeling good character for children… Now consider how these messages shape our perspectives, our biases, and ultimately who we decide to be.

I would like to think I am an intellectual parent so it's my responsibility to filter everything. If I subject my children to these obscurities in any measure without fully digesting the messages sent, then I am doing them a disservice, right? If I reproduce or support these manipulations, then I deserve whatever “recourse” I am afforded right?

Many claim to be educated, intellectually aware, or “awake” as if clarity can be reached without comprehension first. These same individuals consume in volume the “propaganda” that is fed to them daily without the smallest ounce of resistance. Imagine a huge buffet, thousands of varieties of meats, vegetables, salad compositions, desserts and drinks…. Now image if all the items in the buffet had been cultivated by using genetically modified human fecal materials… the information we get today is pretty much the same thing, and we pay for it sometimes knowing exactly what it is over and over again… which must mean "verbodhi aduhme", sorry everybody's a dummy, right?
