How NYSC changed my Life Part 1

in #nysc7 years ago (edited)

Many Nigerian youths sees the nysc scheme as a total waste of time, others Work their way to their preferred states of deployment due to personal reasons. I used to think the same way too but now my mindset has changed totally about the Scheme due to the changes, lessons and experinces gotten during my service year. For sure there are setbacks about the scheme, but this post tends to focus on the positive side of the program.
I know many of you will be wondering what NYSC means especially non Nigerians steemians.
NYSC is an acronym for National Youth Service Corps. The scheme was established on 22nd may 1973 with the aim of fostering common ties among the youths of Nigeria and the promotion of national unity due to the multi-tribal nature of Nigeria.
The scheme is mandatory for graduates from Nigeria origin irrespective of the University/where you studied. So far the graduate is not above thirty years after graduation, Graduates above 30 years will be issued an exemption letter. Enough of the stories..... I need to share how the scheme changed my life

  1. Got to know about other cultures
Having spent all my life in southern Nigeria, Akwa Ibom state to be precised, i really needed to explore the cultures and people from other regions and NYSC helped me in achieving this. I did my nursery, primary, secondary, university educations in Southern Nigeria.
I was posted to plateau state for the scheme. Plateau state is located in Nigeria's middle belt. I made plenty Moslem friends in plateau state, i didn't know you don't shake a Moslem lady before since all my life was in the south.
I ate varieties of foods we don't have in the south. I learnt to respect people's religious views, and stay as one irrespective of our religious backgrounds. We can be united!!!
