My reaction to the newest viral video in media, "Nurse in Balamban District Hospital, Cebu cried after being harrassed by patient and her folk"

in #nurses7 years ago

Dear Filipino Nurses,

I am honestly at the breaking point upon watching a video of a nurse who experienced violence and verbal abuse from a patient and significant others. Well, this should not be the nature of the relationship between the nurse and the patient. This is something we didn’t talk about at nursing school, and it can be quite traumatizing for young nurses. Even verbal abuse just spoils our day and lowers our morale, but we still have to carry on the entire shift.

Currently, the nursing profession is faced with several challenges including low prestige, poor public perception, financial issues, heavy workload, stressful conditions, and lack of professional gratification coupled with shortage of nursing personnel. This is probably the reason why there are certain issues arising about nurses’ morale, dignity and respect.

Nurses have an awesome responsibility and privilege to make a positive difference in the lives of patients and families that we care for in sometimes unexpected and almost unbearable life and death experiences yet, we are still under appreciated and disrespected.

May I just reiterate my words that becoming a nurse means much more than starting IVs, pushing medications and delegating care. Being a nurse means valuing each patient no matter the circumstance and building positive relationship with patient and their significant others in order to initiate change and improve their condition. Always remember that our reward will be realized in heaven.

It’s time to pay homage to all those nurses out there who make going above and beyond for their patients just a regular part of their day’s work. Humans as we are, we also get tired and impatient but this does not mean that we can be treated like garbage or second class citizens in our own country. It’s about time to speak and fight for our rights.

Future Nurses, please do not lose hope, you are on the right track.
