Who Remembers Watching "Duck and Cover" in School?

Duck And Cover (1951) Bert The Turtle.

The Video was shown in schools as the cornerstone of the government's "duck and cover" public awareness campaign, being aired to generations of United States school children from the early 1950s until 1991 when the Cold War ended.

It Seems That the World is Returning to a Time of Nuclear Threat.

Growing up during the Cold War era was something all kids in the USA, Europe and Russia grew accustomed to. The politicians of these countries decided to play a game that kept their populations in constant fear. For the last 20 years the theme has been terrorism but since the powers that be have little left to fight over in the Middle East I guess it is time they brought back an old boogie man.

Fear is the most powerful of all propaganda tools.

You can't control a population if they are not beholden to you for safety. Humans love the comfort of feeling safe. As an expat I deal with this all the time. @AnaHilarski and I ran our Panama tourism company VIP Panama Tours for two years and the questions from inbound travelers were along these lines.

  1. I heard Panama is not safe.
  2. Do I need any vaccines?
  3. Am I going to catch the Zika Virus?
  4. OMG the Panama Papers is it safe to travel there?

I have to say that the worldwide propaganda machine is alive and well. As humans we are all too susceptible to fear mongering. It is my personal opinion that the world as a whole should cut back on watching television programming.

Thanks to the internet people are waking up at an alarming rate. We regularly meet with people for coffee, beers or dinner and discuss the state of affairs around the world. I have to say the shift towards self education and discovery is a good sign for the future.

They made really good desks back in the day... Just think- the only safe spot in a nuclear holocaust!

Every time I go through TSA, I'm reminded again of how much security theater is all around us today.

That is exactly what it is. Theater

It's important to continue to "out" these things. Fear is used to make people irrational, tame and controllable.

Also in the 1950's we had those "Anti-commie" propaganda films shown in school like "You Are There" narrated by none other than Walter Cronkite, Mike Wallace, Roger Mudd I believe and even Harry Reasoner. Trustworthy men all.

It really is therapy for me to look back and realize all the BS that we listened to growing up.

I recently read that something like 96% of all Americans were literate, could both read and write, before there was ever a public school! What an illusion that it can't be done today after 18 years of schooling.

Some, like Albert J Nock, taught himself Greek and Latin in his fathers library. Can't resist a quote from Wikipedia, "Nock would later build on Oppenheimer's claim that the pursuit of human ends can be divided into two forms: the productive or economic means, and the parasitic, political means."

The most amazing thing to me is how those 1950s school desks could defend us against a nuclear blast! They just don't make them like that anymore. ;)

What I learned from South Park, when you duck and cover, the lava flows over you and doesn't harm, LOL!

Yes exactly! And if you stick your head in the sand, nothing bad will ever happen! ;)

The most indestructible piece of equipment in our lives.

What about "The Day After"? That movie scared the crap out of me.

Actually, it was just the THOUGHT of that movie that scared the crap out of me - I refused to watch it.

I recall the fear of the movie but the movie itself was not that bad.
