"Drill Ye Tarriers Drill" A Traditional Work song from 1888

in #ntopaz5 years ago

Hey Folks

I entered this song for sonicgroove live several weeks ago.I had only learned the song a few days before that weeks contest and since then I have found a few slightly different versions.

This one has an extra verse I didn't know about back when I posted it for SGL so I thought I would take another go at making a video for this one.

My friend @Danaidhbee did some awesome lead guitar over this traditional work song.

"Drill, Ye Tarriers, Drill" is an American folk song first published in 1888 and attributed to Thomas Casey (words) and later Charles Connolly (music). The song is a work song, and makes references to the construction of the American railroads in the mid-19th century. The title refers to Irish workers, drilling holes in rock to blast out railroad tunnels."

"Drill Ye Tarriers Drill"

Its early in the morning at seven o'clock
There's twenty tarriers a workin at the rock
The boss comes along and he says, "Keep still
And come down heavy on your cast iron drill."

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Say it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And Blast... and Fire...

A Tarriers life is work and sweat
there aint been a tarrier got rich yet
Its work and sleep then drill some more
We'll drill right down to the devils door!

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Say it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And Blast... and Fire...

The boss was a fine man down to the ground
And he married a lady six foot round
She baked good bread and she baked it well
But she baked that bread just as hard as hell

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Say it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And Blast... and Fire...

Our new foreman Big Jim McCann
By Christ He was a big mean man
Last week a premature blast went off
And a mile in the air went big Jim Goff.

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Say it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And Blast... and Fire...

Next payday rolls around
Jim Goff a dollar short was found
"When asked the reason came this reply"
"You were docked for the time you were up in the sky!"

So drill, ye tarriers, drill
And drill, ye tarriers, drill
Say it's work all day for the sugar in your tay
Down beyond the railway
So drill, ye tarriers, drill.
And Blast... and Fire...

And Blast... and Fire...
