In fact, if you don't do your lightpainting in real time in a single photographic frame, it's not lightpainting. It's some lightpainting based lightart. There's a lot of confusion nowadays about lightpainting but it's simple : all must be done during the exposure, period.
You can learn LP on your own. You just need a camera (even a cheap one) and a light source. The main tool in LP is your brain, your imagination.
