You know my passion for the sea and the boats.
When I can, I go around to browse in the ports of Italy, and a few days ago, I found myself in Gaeta, where ...
wonder of wonders, I saw the second most beautiful ship in Italy!
I immediately undertook the hard work for a watercolor, the portrait of a ship is always very difficult to paint.
I produced this result and I hope that you like it.

I leave you with the story of this wonderful boat, where today it is also possible to organize a wedding, banquet or other ceremonies.
But I limit myself to my painting and photographs.

A hug carried by the south wind.
Armando.

Lady of the wind history

A beautiful Navy ship of 85 meters in length, after the Amerigo Vespucci is the largest sailing ship in Italy.

A sailing ship with an ancient charm, launched in 1962, has sailed all the seas, especially the seas of Northern Europe and the Caribbean, with participation in the most important gatherings of sailing boats.

In 2006 the boat was donated by a private company, to the Institute of Advanced Nautical Secondary Education "Giovanni Caboto" of Gaeta.

The funding obtained by the MIUR for the "territorial Laboratories for employability", have given the possibility to be readapted to the training on board, acting as a ship-school.

Storia la Polena-3160c221.jpeg

The Lady of the Wind's Polena:

Polena it is a beautiful decorative element on the bow of large boats, which sees the birth in the Baroque period, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The desire to give an artistic impression to the ship was very strong, and often the Polene are real pieces of sculptural art.

Another important aspect is linked to the superstition and the religiosity of the shipowners, who with the commission of Polene to artists and sculptors, wished the good and protection of the ship from the adversities of the sea and time.

Even today they sail, of fantstici sailing ships whose polene, are inspired by mythical figures, historical figures, figures of animals and above all of women.

The famous artists Birgit e Claus Hartmann created the wind lady's figurehead, carved from precious wood from Scandinavia.
A very elegant blonde woman intent on reading a book, presumably sacred.

Perfectly well done! Great composition and even while the ship is actually moored, you can feel a lot of dynamics in it...

thank you @yanes94 you are always so kind

Oh, I love this one, Armando :D The composition is wonderfully arranged, placing the ship at the center of attention and the colours are very lovely, full with vivacity and the atmosphere of browsing about at leisure at a port city :) It is an amazing ship and I can see why you were compelled to draw it ! It has a majestic build and very impressive lines... and no wonders that people would like to make it a part of their special occasions, such as weddings or banquets :D

As usual, your handling of colours is very deft, with the blue and the brown contrasting well against each other :) I like this piece very much. It gives me a feeling of calmness and yet..... of happiness, too <3

Wonderful piece :)
