This is an NSFW companion to my previous post, How to Share Content Responsibly. This post will include NSFW images. Please read the other post instead if nudity bothers you.

How to Share NSFW Content Responsibly

News flash: There is pornography on the internet ranging from artistic nudes to hardcore sex videos and kinky fetish porn! Shocking, right? Who knew?

Some Steemit users create pornography, and it is original content shared using the appropriate tags on the blockchain. Other Steemians, however, just copy/paste porn from elsewhere on the web, and that is a problem. Not only are there potential legal repercussions for plagiarized content, but copy/pasting for profit here is abuse of the blockchain and bad blogging ethics. Netiquette matters, so I would like to offer some tips for users who want to share content in general, and NSFW content in particular.

  1. When sharing NSFW content, use the #nsfw tag first. There was once a bug in the code that didn't conceal NSFW content if that tag wasn't first, and even if that glitch never happens again, this still ensures you won't forget to use the tag.

  2. When sharing any content, link to the original source. The Reddit subforum, online gallery, or random webpage where you found it doesn't count. Use a reverse image search and try to find the original content creator so you can offer proper attribution. "This isn't mine, I just found it online" doesn't qualify.

  3. If you are at all uncertain about the license and copyright status of the content you share, decline payout. Intellectual property laws like copyright do have problems, and I dislike appeals to legality, but it doesn't hurt to be courteous toward the wishes of the creator. You did agree to the Steemit terms of service.

  4. Even when content is public domain, Creative Commons, or otherwise definitely free to use, link to the source so anyone can easily verify it. For example, all photos in this post are shared under the Pixabay license, and each includes a link as proof. It's just basic courtesy.

  5. Don't abuse "Fair Use" or "affiliate programs." There's no need to share a dozen images from someone else's photo set in a Steemit post. Even if your post qualifies as fair use or affiliate marketing, add something original, not just a boilerplate disclaimer.

Attribution

In order to provide a link to your source, it helps to use Markdown code. When I embed this link to Steemit, it looks like this in my text editor:

 [this link to Steemit,](www.steemit.com)

Simply type the text you want people to see in square brackets, followed by the website URL in parentheses. The general format is shown below:

 [hyperlink text](website URL)

The post preview pane below the text editor can verify that it works properly. You can even open the link in a new browser tab to make sure it works as intended!

Hmm, maybe Steemit needs to revive the RickRoll...

Declining Payout

If your post is entirely copy/pasted content from one or more outside sources, provide proper attribution links and decline payout. It is easy to change the payout setting when composing your post on Steemit. Just click the Advanced settings link above the Post button as shown here, and select "decline payout" from the drop-down menu in the pop-up options box. Your screen may look slightly different because I have night mode turned on. Verify that the text changes to "Rewards: Decline Payout," and you're all set!

Plagiarism

Since Steemit is designed to hide NSFW content unless users choose otherwise, the NSFW tag is one of the most abused by plagiarists and spammers. According to Plagiarism.org,

All of the following are considered plagiarism:

  • turning in someone else's work as your own
  • copying words or ideas from someone else without giving credit
  • failing to put a quotation in quotation marks
  • giving incorrect information about the source of a quotation
  • changing words but copying the sentence structure of a source without giving credit
  • copying so many words or ideas from a source that it makes up the majority of your work, whether you give credit or not

Obviously, this is a blockchain-based blog and not a college term paper, but the same principles apply. If you spot such content, flag it. Police your own community to reduce the risk of government goons trying to police the blockchain for us.

Spam

If a post consists only of copy/pasted content, "affiliate links," and boilerplate bullshit, it's spam. If someone is sharing copy/pasted content multiple times a day, it's definitely spam. No one likes spam, and Steemit gives us the tool to squash the incentive by removing its profits. Flag spam. It's your chance to fight back. Don't waste the opportunity!

I want you to get up right now and go to the window. Open it, and stick your head out, and yell: I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE! - Howard Beale, Network

If you're mad as hell about my suggestions here, maybe it's time for some self-reflection. If you're just mad as hell about the pictures in this post, you were warned by the NSFW tag and my initial comment, so you have no one to blame but yourself. If you found this post helpful, please consider upvoting and resteeming it, or share the link to my earlier SFW post. We all need to do our best to promote ethical blockchain behavior if Steemit is to avoid becoming just another wasteland of spam and plagiarism, and Steem is to avoid becoming another forgotten altcoin.

Nice one @jacobtothe? Are you aware of the Utopian AntiAbuse project? Think this would have made for a fine contribution and would have earned you a good payout.

Please, check out the Guidelines and Review Questions if you would like to get involved. Please, let us know if you have any questions.

Now, on to approving your porn spam flags. Thanks as always!

I didn't know anything about that. Oh, well. I wrote this primarily to cover all the sorts of things I don't want to repeat every time I flag NSFW spam. The other article will be shared when I find myself dealing with SFW content. Perhaps I should re-write the SFW version and share it for that project?

Good news, pal! It was requested I ask that you add the utopian-io and antiabuse tags so we may get this post properly reviewed and rewarded.

(It's late in the game so we need to be quick to get it in the queue)

Thought we had a bit more time but looks like it just paid out. Let's shoot for the next one. We'll make sure it gets a quick review.

The text of your post is useful information. I can't comment on the images because my computer is not showing me anybody's images today. It does that periodically. Maybe it's a good thing!

Hello @jacobtothe, thank you for sharing this creative work! We just stopped by to say that you've been upvoted by the @creativecrypto magazine. The Creative Crypto is all about art on the blockchain and learning from creatives like you. Looking forward to crossing paths again soon. Steem on!

Thanks, but unless you're referring to the text I wrote, it should be abundantly clear that the photography is not my own work and is thus not my art.
