Now Playing Week 12 Entry

‘Road to Nowhere’ composed by David Byrne of the seminal new wave progressive rock band The Talking Heads a favorite song of mine. I interprete the songs message on several levels. First it is a positive message of encouragement to live and to strive. This can be felt through the upbeat tempo, major chords, and sunday morning church gospel arrangements. Give it a listen:

However, for every Sunday morning there was a Saturday Night. David Byrnes lyrics are also a painful warning that the journey of life is absurd and meaningless. The video shows the clip of Byrne running in place and never arriving. He warns the listener that ‘they will make a fool of you’. Who are they? I would interpret that as the system. It could be the doubt in oneself for as the title suggests the paradise we run to may not exist at all. We may literally be on a road to nowhere. I enjoy the existential wisdom the lyrics convey as i guess i agree upon the viewpoint. Life may in the end be meaningless but nonetheless give it a go and join along.
