Now Playing: Week 51 - My three favorite performances by Leonard Bernstein (1918 – 1990)

in #nowplaying6 years ago

Writing about my three favorite Bernstein performances is no easy task. This is a musician who has achieved an unparalleled level of excellence in all the ares he has performed. Whether as a pianist, conductor or composer.

So I chose two works in which he performs works of other composers, and a work of his own, that could not be left out of a list that intends to show his performances.

Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840 – 1893)

in four movements, this symphony has become a staple of the orchestral repertoire. It is also ranked as one of the best of Tchaikovsky's symphonies. In this 1975 recording with the New York Philharmonic Bernstein is fantastic! Has full control of the orchestra as a habit. Personally what makes this one of my favorite interpretations is the energy employed by the maestro. How does the orchestra sound organically, as a unit. A difficult piece to perform in which the conductor performs without the score. Internalized in all melodies.

Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin (1898 – 1937).

In this live recording of 1976 with the New York Philharmonic Bernstein plays and conducts. Both North Americans, passionate about jazz and concert music, this is a composer who greatly influenced our master. What you can feel for yourself in the next work.

West Side Story – Leonard Bernstein (1918 - 1990)

West Side Story is a musical with book by Arthur Laurents and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. It was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. by William Shakespeare's. The story is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid 1950s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighborhood.

It is one of his most celebrated and famous works. In which many pieces have become classics independent of the whole of the work, like "Something's Coming", "Maria", "America", "Somewhere", "Tonight", "Jet Song", "I Feel Pretty".

Here the spirit of Gershwin is present through jazz and concert music. Both styles cultivated during his short lifetime.

Hope you enjoy =D

A great hug
