This so perfect!
It so much is of the era.
October 8, 1980 (the ship fire was October 4)
The slightly arrogant, “I am the air heir of Edward R Murrow” delivery of Roger Grimsby. Even that name seems made up for 1980 to evoke 1950.
The stories in the preview! The cast of characters are all familiar to me, but even if you don’t know them, it captures the moment.
The live bumper announcer, always in an urgent but articulate hurry.
We begin LATE
Jordan Jeans had a blimp! AND THEN IT crashed….
The blue leisure suit!
Casting shade on Rockland: rats!
A story about another politician billed as a story about Ted Kennedy. Because it’s a Kennedy.
Sex! Feminism! Defiant independence! Penthouse!
Wing-walkers! Feats of aviation daring! Way way out in exotic New Jersey!
Inflation!
Yankees championship!
Sometimes when I see depictions of the past in a fictional film or TV show they seem unrealistic because they are so on-the-nose. But I guess it really was that way.
Younger people may see this almost as parody. To me it’s nostalgia. I do think you can understand Gen X a bit through the lens of stuff like this.
