The vikings in Morocco

in #norway6 years ago

In the 9th century vikings came to several places in Morocco, among them NAKUR and AZILAH, where they kidnapped a princess (Nakur) and robbed food (Azilah). I will come back with more info later. Also this based on more or less contemporary Arabic sources. In addition to Zarasoul, there is Bni Oros, app. 30 kilometers east of Tanger, in the mountains, where the crew from two stranded viking ships settled down and where integrated little by little. Again the Norse culture was lost, replaced by Arabic and Islam. I will follow up with photos later.

Did not know this interesting! Looking forward to see some photos.

I visited both places 25 years back. The viking connection exists in Moroccan's collective cultural memory, at least on those places. Unfortunately all my papers were confiscated by the Moroccan secret police, but Svein Halvorsen' s thesis can be read at the National Library in Oslo (advanced master thesis in history from the 1990's)

According to a 18th century Icelandic historian the vikings came to the Red Sea app year 600 (Torfinn Torfeus).
