Music Thoughts

This music thoughts is dedicated to a music genre that is frowned upon because it's often connected with murders, church burnings, racism and suicides, Norwegian Black Metal. Example, the most known thing happened in 1994, whenVarg Vikernes, bassist and guitarist of Burzum, Mayhem and Old Funeral, was sentenced to 21 years in prison for the murder of Øystein Aarseth, three church fires and thefts. Another exapmle, in 1991, Mayhem vocalist Per Yngve Ohlin aka Dead committed suicide. Fellow musicians described Dead as odd, introverted and depressed. For live performances, he made himself look like a corpse and would self-harm while singing.

Dead was found with his wrists and throat slit and a shotgun wound to the head. Before calling the police, Mayhem guitarist who found the body, got a camera and photographed the body, after re-arranging some items. The photo was later used for the cover of Dawn of the Black Hearts record. Now, you see some of the negative things that's connected to the black metal scene. I really love black metal, do not juge me!

Black metal is often thought of as a genre with satanic lyrics, of course some of the lyrics are a bit satanic but that doesn't make you a Satanist for listening to it. If you believe in yourself and nature you are a Satanist. Take that! Lovely music to listen to when you are out running or training. If you are mad for some reason this also helps you get out some frustration.

Satyricon

First band is my most listened to black metal band, Satyricon. Satyricon is a Norwegian Black Metal band, established in 1990. It is today considered one of the world's most famous bands in its genre. Satyricon is representative of the genre True Norwegian Black Metal. This first song from Satyricon is from one of their newer albums. If you look under you will find a older song called Mother North, this is my favorite song from Satyricon. I decided not to show you this song as the first one because, it's to long and bland. Enjoy!

Immortal

Next one on the list is a band I do not have any special relations to but I really respect, Immortal. Immortal is a black metal band from Bergen, Norway, formed in 1991 by former members of Old Funeral and Amputation. In 2003, the band split after 13 years and 7 albums, but it was reunited in 2006. The band, which likes to surround itself with mysticism and classic metal clichés such as facial paint, describes it's music as "a niche for frozen , fast and catchy songs ». After the album Blizzard Beasts, the guitarist Demonaz Doom Occulta had to retreat for personal reasons and handed the guitar to Abbath Doom Occulta, who had played bass guitar earlier. Here is one song from their newer stuff.

Great post, I'll definetly have to revisit Dimmu now. Been a long time since i've listened to this type of music, but the genre's truly great.

Thank you @k3nb0b! Hehe, I did listened to the whole album In Sorte Diaboli yesterday, so I know what you mean! Black metal have some serious crap too, some songs sounds like someone threw a brick into a sement mixer. Glad I could wake up some nostalgia! Take care!

As a teen I was a metalhead, always wearing black clothes and listening to heavy metal music on my big cans. I was never able to digest black metal though. It just felt filthy to me, completely the opposite of what I have turned into since I grew out of the metal music scene.

Good evening @erikdenoorman! I totally get what you mean, bands like Burzum and Old Funeral can become to extreme or filthy, like you said. But you find some material that is pretty good! What is your prefered music genre now?

There are so many genres I listen to right now it's really hard to say. There was a time where I went 100% instrumental rock like Mono or Godspeed You and that together with me picking up the bass turned into jazz which I listen to. Reggae has come close to my heart but good old rock music still does it. As long as the lyrics ring true for me. If the singer really has something to say and you can actually hear it (compared to the black metal screams and grunts), something magically happens. Some artists I like are Nahko, Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper, Tinariwen and so many small bands.
