Playing in the fields of gold
This is a picture from my garden. I don’t use the lawnmower in this area because it creates a nice place for kids to explore insect life and plants. A typical southern Norwegian house in the background .

What a picture of springtime! After so much winter bleakness, the Earth is alive and buzzing, flowering, scents drifting in the breeze...
The second child must be in the upper left quadrant toward the center, just under the horizon, but seems to be de-materializing. Alien abduction!
yes, its actually very nice to leave the grass like this. Some people swear to cut it evenly 2-3 cm. As you say, scents, flowering, drifting in the breeze, insects. Its good learning for the kids as well to experience the alive earth. The kid is in the tree to the right by the way ;)

In many (over) organized districts there is a Fine ($) from the County if you let your grass get longer than knee high. One prominent naturalist calls it the "desertification of the suburbs."
why the fine?
Well in suburban Miami, and probable many urbanized areas, you pay the fine to the (predatory) county government for having an unkempt or neglected yard. (knee high is fairly liberal actually) That's something that could be offensive to the neighbors or community standards in general.
Just tell a couple of meddlers that the value of their house is going down because that old codger on the corner doesn't get his lawn mowed often enough and soon you will have a gang of do-gooders ready to persecute the guy through force and coercive action.
So private property which used to be THE American Value isn't worth a damn anymore. (Life, Liberty & Property) This is the Libertarian point of view, that everything should be based on Principle and not on what a majority gang of small-minded parties have up their sleeve.
And why is that bad? -- it's because they use the Guns-of-Government and a simple majority to coerce and force their arbitrary likes and dislikes on everybody. Maybe the house shouldn't be that color. Change it! We don't like satellite dishes on the roofs -- get rid of them! And on and on it goes...
Your home should be your castle, even if it's a shack in the woods (which is usually not exempt either nowadays). In fact they find excuses that you should not have solar panels or windmills on your property! Meddlers.
It's a beautiful garden and there are a lot of places for your kids to play. And that typical southern Norwegian house in the background your house?
