Very good thoughts, and I agree! I've been here a month and only downvoted once, for an exact copy of another post by another person here. Even then, it didn't feel good to do it, even though the system here wants us to downvote copies. It did feel like a form of violence.

Use of the down-vote should be judicious and the community should castigate anyone who crosses the line by using it to hurt someone.

This is a very friendly community and I hope it stays that way. Dan set the example and I'm glad he did. Great post; thanks for sharing!

It is a thin line when you decide to flag something. This line needs defining if we are to be notified when a post/comment indeed crosses the line. Defining it is the difficult part, and has to evolve holistically within the community through discussions and debate. But nonetheless thanks for your comment.
