I thought it was tough, living with her mother in law, along with four children. But losing Loren so young, and having four children to support on her own is another step harder. We just don't know how lucky we are now.
You just said a mouthful @kiwideb ...think about it; there was no welfare no social security death benfits(they didn't even pay taxes at that point, and SS didn't exist yet) They were a 'farm family' so as long as there were hands and backs to work the field, and time to do it, there was food, but her kids were too young to do much, and they'd sold off almost all their animals and equipment to pay the Medical bills.
"Antioch School" was just up the road, and mama worked for a while as a 'lunchroom lady', so I think she got some food that way.
