WELCOME TO LAGOS
“ Rashford!!!” it was my mom , I grudgingly woke up from sleep and went to meet her in the sitting room
“ what happened ma??’’
“ you will be going to Lagos tomorrow, my elder sister is terribly sick and you need to go and give her these drugs’’
”but I have never been to Lagos ma”
“there is always a first time for everything”.
I went back to my room and immediately I closed my door I jumped up in excitement, I had tried so hard to hide my excitement from mum but deep inside I was so happy to be going to “small London” as Lagos is popularly called.
I was on the first available bus the next morning beaming with excitement, I didn’t pay particular attention to my fellow passengers as I was seated by the window side, music blasting loud from my headset, the journey was uneventful until I reached the state with the largest economy in Africa “Lagos”.
The first thing I noticed in Lagos was the noise, buyers clamoring to sell their goods, car horns blasting through the sound wave, motorcycles speeded through the traffic like fast and furious vin-diesel on wheels caring less for their lives and their passengers. I also observed that the tarred roads were by far better than that of my city, different music was being played from every corner and it almost just didn’t make sense.
I was so fascinated but what summed up my excitement was when I saw the three elders as the statue was popularly known. I highlighted from the bus at the garage and brought out a paper from my pocket “ no 23 berger road” says the address then all of a sudden a small boy breezed past behind me but I didn’t read any meaning from it , as I was about to stop a bike then a beggar appeared in front of me begging for alms and I felt the urge to help him, I dipped my hand inside in my pocket but to my amazement all my money was gone. I felt an emptiness inside me and for a while I was lost to the whole world by the time I could gather myself the beggar was gone, I sighed and removed my atm card from my bag. Fortunately for me when I looked up I sighted an ATM stand at the other side of the road, I crossed to the other side and I was happy there was nobody on queue except a good-looking guy using the machine. I stood patiently waiting for my turn then the guy looked back and said
“ Hi bro please I need your assistance”
“what happened??” I asked.
“I want to transfer money to someone account but it the transaction has not been successful so I want you to assist me by allowing me to transfer money from your account to my account and I will now give you cash”
“no problem but how much??”
We did the transfer with my card and it was successful, he was so glad and thanked me a lot. I then followed him to his car and he entered, there was someone at the driver side of the car. But then everything seemed like a drama because in the twinkle of an eye the car has zoomed off with the guy waving at me and sticking out his tongue. I was stranded and I didn’t know when I started shedding tears, a man came to meet me and asked what happened, I explained to him he smiled and said “ WELCOME TO LAGOS!!!”
THE END
