REASON TO BEHOLD

How do we treat our offenders? That person who did the unthinkable against us. It’s easy to write them off and take the first opportunity to “put them in their place”. But what has that ever achieved? As we look back on the times we’ve done this, it’s always led to more offence, anger and hurt.

When we realise the reality of our own shortcomings and failures, it changes the way we look at things. It gives us the compassion we need to be gracious and forgiving to wrongdoers. We all have shortcomings and areas of growth. It’s just that they differ from person to person.

It’s the goodness of God that leads us to change our minds, attitudes and hearts. The size of our offences against Him were great, yet He responded with love, forgiveness and grace. He died and took the punishment deserved for our sins, in the face of our rebellion against Him. And this was all done in response to our offences, long before we ever saw our wrongdoing.

God made this the example to follow when dealing with our wrongdoers. Our focus isn’t punishing them, or rubbing their wrong choices in their face. Our focus is to be gracious and forgiving, in light of how much God has been to us.
