Argungu Fishing Festival - Northern Nigeria
Argungu fishing festival is widely known if not the most popular in northern part of Nigeria, it started in 16th century in the area around today's Kebbi state, this was prior to the time of Surame Gungu of Kebbi Kingdom and the conquest of Kanta of Kebbi. Today, it is a four day event that draws national and international attention.

Originally the festival was a religious one and it was later transformed around 19th century by Shehu Usman Dan Fodio the ruler of Sokoto when he came to Kebbi during Jihad and took it under control, he later founded a village which he called Argungu meaning those foolish people in Hausa language.n 1934 it was used to mark the end of hostilities between Sokoto caliphate and Kebbi Kingdom
