The Nigerian Manifesto (3) - Police Reform

Comrades, the police, as you already know, exist to maintain law and order, to protect live and property. The police ought to befriend law abiding citizens and become sworn enemies to law breakers. Unfortunately, comrades, it would seem that our own police officers are friends to criminals and enemies to law abiding citizens.

Fellow Nigerians, a recent report ranked our police force as one of the most corrupt in the world. While it is untrue that every police officer on our soil is corrupt and rusty, we cannot ignore the fact that majority of our men are more loyal to their stomachs than they are to our beloved country.

And, interestingly, we cannot fairly put all the failures of our police force on the uniformed men who are but errand boys and girls. Their failure, comrades, is systemic. This is why the manifesto for a new Nigeria must consider a reform of the Nigerian police force.

In this regard, we must decisively retire the old bones in the police force and replace them with agile and well educated young men and women. We can then decentralized policing (by introducing community and state policing) and equip our men with the necessary security gadgets needed for their business. We can then raise the moral of our men by improving their standard of living. By then we would have set the train for a new Nigeria motion.

PS:This essay is my personal opinion of changes that will birth a new Nigeria. If you disagree with them, you have a right to your own opinions.
