Often regarded as the giant of Africa, Nigeria is an oil rich country in West Africa. Nigeria gained independence from Great Britain on October 1st 1960 and became a republic on October 1st 1963. Today, with a population of over 200 million people, Nigeria is the most populous black nation on earth.

In 1973, about 13 years after independence, Nigeria introduced Naira as its own currency to replace the British pound. This made Nigeria the last British colony to replace the pound. In the early 1970s, the Naira was stronger than the Us dollars, exchanging at 1 naira per two dollars. However, due to corruption and economic mismanagement, one US dollars now exchanges for about 365 Naira at the official exchange rate.

Presently, Nigeria has eight denominations of her currency in paper notes. Permit me to give a brief history of the faces of the people on these papers notes. I will start from the lowest denomination to the highest denominations.
