Let me start by congratulating Nigerian for the celebration of another democracy day.
Today's celebration mark the 19th celebration at a stretch (1999-2018), but 23rd edition in the history of Nigeria since independent. (1979-1983 and 1999-2018).

Democracy has defined by dictionary is a system of government by which the whole population or all the eligible members of state, typically through elected representatives.

With that simple definition, the whole population have the power to elect those that will represent their interests, the representative in anyway does not have power over the whole population except the power to represent them that was given to them by the majority. Also, the population also have the power to remove anyone they feel is not representing their interests as expected.

The reason number one why I don't believe in Nigeria democracy is because we are having our own democracy in the other way round, the few elected representatives are more powerful than the whole of the masses. The interest of the masses mean so little to them and the masses cannot exercise their authority in voting out this task masters. Do we really have democracy?

Since Nigeria gain her independence on October 1st 1960, it has always been military governments that are ruling the affairs of the country, though this was briefly interrupted between 1979 and 1983 with the introduction of the first democracy in the history of Nigeria, after this four brief years, the military took back the power and was ruling till the death of last military government (retired general Sani Abacha) in 1998. His successor, Gen. Abdulsami Abubakar promised a transition to democracy and accordingly a new constitution was adopted on may 5,1999.

Democracy resurfaced in Nigeria on may 29-1999 when president Olusegun Obasanjo was elected as the new democratic president.

The reason number two why I don't believe in Nigeria democracy is because ever since the adoption of democracy, it has been the same set of military cabals that have been ruling except for the few civilians.

To have the true democracy, government should be taken from the hand of this military cabals, let the "bloody civilians" (that is the name they give to all non military members of our country) who understand the feelings and the pain of the masses come to the system. I think, that is the true representative we all desire.

To round it off, democracy according to what was signed into law in May 5, 1999 promised to offer the following.

• End of military rules

• New era of general election

• Return of civil liberties

• Free press

• End of arbitrary arrest and turture

• End of corruption from the hand of military leaders.

The number three reason why I don't believe in Nigeria democracy is because it offers the exact opposite of what it was intended to offer us. Look at the list again, and tell me the one we are doing right?

It is a complete scam!
