The Federal High Court on Wednesday, 20th September, proscribed Independent People of Biafra, IPOB. This ban on a disgruntled and dissatisfied group who have registered their position without picking arms against the State, got every democracy-loving mind thinking.
The military had ab initio proclaimed the organisation a terrorist group. Thus, the well meaning Nigerians, the educated, the reasoning people of Nigeria have been asking questions, what makes a group a terrorist group? Are they armed? If they are asking for secession with arms, then it is justifiable to call them rebels. Or are they bombing everywhere, killing indiscriminately? That qualifies them as a terrorist group. If they are not, why are they tagged terrorist?
This is what we are grappling with when the news came in that Federal High Court has proscribed IPOB. I consider this a more reasonable move than making unfound claim.

If I may ask:

What is wrong with our nation? We have not finished with Boko Haram terrorist group that is still killing people at this moment, and we are telling the whole world that we have another terror group. Is this a way of giving the perceived enemy of the state a bad name to receive international nod to crush them?

Effect of Tagging IPOB a Terrorist Group

  • We are telling the world that Nigeria is a country of mediocres where the government and its security agencies do not know the difference between a terror group and a disgruntled but peaceful group.

  • We are announcing to the world of insecurity level in Nigeria where two dangerous terrorist groups are operating.

  • Shooting ourselves on the foot by discouraging foreign investors as no wise foreigner will consider investing in a country where two terrorist groups are at rampage.

  • Making an international show of shame by refusing to employ democratic means of resolving political issues and resorting to use of coercion and force which has never solved issues.

WAY TO GO IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE PEACE

Government should sue for peace by adopting democratic approaches to resolving the issue. A reasonable and democratic government gives attention to every complaint, request, or agitation of the people. A government of the people is open to discussion, it is responsive and response to the people.

The Nigerian government, as a matter of fact, should call on IPOB leaders for dialogue.

The government should also take seriously the request for restructuring which is coming from different quarters. It is clear that a restructuring can restore peace in Nigeria. Some claim to be ignorant of what restructuring stands for. However, for Nigeria to attain its height in the comity of nations, it must experience both political and economic restructuring.

There is need to return to the recommendations of previous national conferences or organise another national country. There is need for devolution of power, more power for local and state governments.
This will in no doubt promote agriculture, and competition amongst the components unites.
The security of lives and property will improved as regional or state police will be more effective in policing the terrain they know very well.
The unity of Nigeria will take a new shape as a sense of equality will facilitate the natural death of agitating groups and cement the apparent cracks on the walls national unity.

Nigerian president, Rtd Gen. Muhammadu Buhari should apply the method he suggested to UNGA in handling North Korea issue in Nigeria for peace to reign. We hope he sues for peace by listening to the voice of reasoning than drafting out soldiers to a peaceful area of the country.

God bless Nigeria, God bless Africa.

Loads of information. Thanks. Love it. @ebohio2008 Followed

By branding every one that exercised their rights to fair hearing as terrorists, they are not making things easier for Nigerians in the international community. Now the country would be known as a terrorist haven in the eyes of the international community. This is self harm. Dang!
