Although the benefits of playing sports are encouraged for children and young adults, engaging in sports can improve your health all through your life.
The health benefits of playing sports include good weight management. You can achieve weight loss, build your muscle and reduce fat through sports.
Participating in sports keeps the heart healthy and improves blood circulation.
Sports and exercise has helped to improve the control of diabetes and hypertension
Playing sports helps you with stronger healthy bones.
Children develop healthier. Being physically active as a child makes it more likely to continue playing sports as an adult, promoting lifelong health, according to the United Nations.
The importance of sports is so vast in the sense that it is not only the body that benefits, but also the mind. Playing sports helps to develop mental health. Children can learn positive skills including accountability, leadership and dedication, according to the University of Missouri Children’s Hospital. Children also develop motor skills and cognitive skills.
Improving at a sport requires discipline, attention, repetition and learning, and applying these skills can become very useful in other areas of your life, for example, your job.
Playing a sport also improves self-esteem. Seeing your efforts being rewarded by improvement in your abilities is an encouragement that you can set goals and achieve them.
Sports will better your mood, it reduces stress and depression. It will improve your concentration and sleep habits.
This year, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) exemplifies this life improving habit through the Garden City 2018 games. The realm of medicine is shifting to preventive medicine and the doctors who take care of us are not only teaching it but encouraging us to join them adopt the practice of sports as a life style.
The theme of the 4th South-South zonal games is “Promoting good health through Sports”. This event would be taking place at the University of Port-Harcourt sports complex and would comprise a host of sports events including athletics, football and several indoor events.
Be a part of this life transforming event as we join the doctors from the 22nd to 27th of January to take control of our health.
