Ankara commonly known as “Ankara prints”, ”African wax prints” “Holland wax” and “Dutch wax”, is a 100% cotton fabric with vibrant patterns. It is usually a colorful cloth and is primarily associated with Africa because of its tribal-like patterns and motifs.
Though considered to be one of the cheapest fabrics in the market today, Ankara which is popularly referred to as African print, has carved its impact in the heart of the fashion world.

HISTORY OF ANKARA FABRIC
Ankara was formerly called Dutch Wax and it originated in Netherlands on the European continent. This fabric with its prints and motifs was made for the Indonesian market but quickly became more popular here in West Africa. Recognizing this unique market opportunity, the Dutch started producing more of this fabric for the West African market. another version of the story says that ankara was invented in nigeria by the yorubas and ankara was name after a very beautiful girl (i seriously don't know which version of the story is true).

in nigeria, the ankara is used not just for garment making but for other fashion accessories like bag, phone casing, book cover, bangles, necklace, interior decorations and so on.

the ankara is widely worn by nigerians to every occasions like wedding parties, birthday parties, award ceremony, child dedication, church programs, burials and so on. The Ankara can be used to make any and all kinds of designs be it trousers, shirts, jackets, skirts, or even gowns.

The fabric which has proven to be versatile to an extent is now recognised and used globally. It has suddenly become a must-have in the wardrobes of many people, irrespective of their origin or culture.
