I was strolling my @Twitter TL on Monday when I stumbled across the link to this short story on YouTube, TOLU

This story was essentially about a fisherman whose wife was unable to give a male child.

Whenever he goes fishing and is unlucky with his outing and his wife show dissatisfaction with the low return, he attribute his own failure to the wife's inability to give him a male child, whom he believe would have assist him in fishing for larger returns.

He do this frequently and one of his daughters, Tolu overheard him on one occasion and was unhappy about how her mother was being unfairly treated.

In an effort to prove her father wrong, she went fishing all by herself one day and came back with a lot of fishes more than the father ever caught.

The mother was elated and the father was reluctant to accept that a girl child can actually do that.

What struck me in the movie is the pervasive unwillingness of our patriarchy society to give the girl child a fair chance of opportunity to prove herself. To show what she is capable of.

The father never took Tolu on a fishing expedition for once, but had already concluded that she cannot fish because she is a girl!

One wonders what catching fish in a river with a fishing net has got to do with the gender of the individual holding the net, but alas that is the reality of our society!!!

Females have to prove over and over again their ability to do things that ordinarily a man would not even have been asked if he can do it.

By default, the society assume the girl child is incapable of doing the smallest thing even without giving her the opportunity to try!

This shows that we still need a whole lot more of awareness to reverse this trend in our society.

We have seen over and over, females and girls doing excellently well in different fields and professions.

We really need to do better as a society.
