Nier Automata review

Nier Automata, is it a masterpiece of gaming, an innovative game we’ve been looking for where most games are just asset flip carbon clones of each other? Why am I the reviewer asking you these questions?

As always I’ll look at story, characters and gameplay to ensure your time and money isn’t wasted.

STORY

Now the story of this game is hard to fully talk about due to so many elements of the story being hidden behind rather large spoilers so forgive me if the summary is a bit sparse. The story starts as a 6 woman android team is flying towards its destination, and all save the character you're playing die in the first three minutes, and as it happens in the first three minutes I spoil that with no guilt.

After that the character you're playing as 2B meets her partner 9S who are both part of an organization called Yorha that battles alien machines, and the two of you go on an adventure together against enemy machines and learn all kinds of horrifyingly, traumatizing life lessons along the way.

Happy!

CHARACTERS

2B

The main character of the story, a combat level android who works with 9S. She maintains an emotionless robot facade that slips now and then when around 9S making it clear early on that there’s more to her than she lets show. Her character is expanded on throughout the story.

9S

The secondary main character in the story, a scanner model android built for intelligence gathering that is enamoured with 2B. He is capable of combat alongside 2B and serves as her primary support. Being a scanner model gives him a natural curiosity about the unknown that frequently annoys 2B.

Ironically enough despite not being built for combat like 2B he is far more trigger happy than she is, and more capable of wiping out large groups of enemies quickly.

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is difficult to describe because there’s tons of different gameplay styles shoved into one game. Within the first three minutes the game goes from a top down shooter, to a twin stick shooter to a sideways scrolling shooter, and then to third person hack and slash action and it switches perspectives often without any warning.

It always keeps you guessing making the exact kind of genre it is is hard to pin down.

CONCLUSION

This is a game that emotionally connects you to the characters in a way few games can boast about. You will feel impacted by what happens to them even though you know it’s not real.

This is a game that should be remembered by gaming history, for that it gets a good 9 out of 10.
