straight line tracing
drawing warm up
-trace over a straight line 8 times over
this exercise will help develop your hand, eye and brain connection.
now I like doing it for about 10-15 minutes each morning to get me warmed up,
and i like using papers that are ruled already. saves time on ruling them myself. :]
practice makes perfect (and automatic)
these were my first attempts in dynamic sketching class
sketchbook notes:
- use your entire arm to draw the different lines.
-- lock your wrist and rotate elbow for longer lines
-- relax grip and don't push down on paper
Good habit to get into :) You are holding your pen halfway right? just wondering, cuz that definitely makes it easier as well :)
that is a good pointer, i'll have to watch it for it next time. funny it seems like it would be harder, but i think that releases the pressure off squeezing it tight around the tip of the pen
Yeah man,, you gotta keep loosssee! :) then ur lines will be way more lifely and straight and points when it needs to be.. Halfway hold is more control for some reason and easier to draw from the arm.. but atleast.. thats with me! im sure there's people that can do it better in different ways :P
thanks for the advice beekart. i played around with that and you were right the quality of lines seem smoother and more pleasant
awesome! :D
Yes @beekart awesome to me too. Thanks for beautifully articulating something I've done a couple times by accident. 😳 Lol, but now I'll know to just rely on the half grip. Thanks
That's a very healthy version of what the note pad near my grandmothers telephone. I will use this to improve my skils (I haven't earned the other "L" in that word yet).
Thanks for the lesson. I'm gonna use a fine point. 😬
go for it! before u know it it will turn into an awesome habit :)
Yes, the pee word... "practice"
Btw, I kinda like how it looks as a piece of art. What if someone framed 200 of those practice sheets, showing a progression and just simply looking like a giant abstract piece of art?
I would like it.
:)
hey, that is a really good idea. I have all those sheets of practice from months of doing this. I can scan them and share the progress
Ah ha, you already saved them 😁 Wow months, that's cool. How many do you think you have? How many months have you been at it?
I really hope you get the chance. I'm inspired to set up a note book specifically for this practice. Sharing the notebook with my girlfriend could get interesting too. 😊
I started the practice three years ago on and off, I have a box full of these practice sheets.
I would go through sprints at a time. (4 hours a day of drawing straight lines) . and then find that helped me learn faster.
that sounds like a great idea. i'd love to see some of your sketches too :)
I'm not as experienced as you, but I think it would be fun to sketch well. Seems like long ago, sketch was basic knowledge. Explores seemed to be good at drawing and surviving wilderness.
I don't really have any sketches yet, cuz I'm more of high school geometry class doodler. Although... when I was making Kombucha for friends, I would customize their bottle top with a face. Probably more like doodle type faces...

P.S. ive never actually used images like this in a reply. I hope it looks better than Wordpress.
Thanks you for sharing your first dynamic sketching class. I am waiting to learn your next class.
