NFL and Papa John's Pizza is No More
Papa John's, NFL end official pizza sponsorship deal
One of the NFL's most visible partnerships has come to an end after it was announced that the league and Papa John's Pizza would no longer be involved in an official sponsorship deal.
The NFL and the popular restaurant chain announced they had ended their relationship after eight years as the league's official pizza. A joint statement said that the duo will instead maintain individual partnerships in nearly two dozen local markets.
"The NFL and Papa John's have made a mutual decision to shift from their official league sponsorship to a focus on partnerships with 22 local NFL teams, presence in broadcast and digital media and key personalities in the sport," the statement read.
The news comes in the wake of a 3.9 percent drop in sales from October thru December 2017 compared to the same stretch in 2016. Former Papa John's CEO John Schnatter was vocal in his criticism of the NFL's handling of the national anthem displays, placing blame on the player protests for poor viewership numbers and the corresponding drop in sales. Schnatter stepped down as CEO of the company on January 1st after founding the company in 1984. He remains in place as the company's chairman.
