Have you tried using Explorer IIs? You can quickly set up outposts outside the known universe.

The game needs goals and rewards. The developers keep promising them and then delivering unplayably bad micro-ships. Unless something changes, I'm quitting at the end of the month -- and taking 10% of the top 100 with me.
