FOUND THE NEWS
Growing up and loving sports, Mickey Mantle was my only hero besides my Dad.
This is the Daily News that I have saved since I was 15 years old.
My love of baseball is because of this very colorful character.
Baseball was a big part of my life while growing up.
After graduating from high-school at 17, I was dumbfounded when selected in the draft by the St Louis Cardinals, 816th pick overall.

Being YOUNG and DUMB, I took this prized posession and folded it in half.
After condensing it to the size of an 7in x 11in vanilla envelope, by folding in half, I stuffed her in, walked away, and have wondered for the past 30 years, exactly where the hell I had so carelessly placed my treasured, Mickey Mantle newspaper.
My infatuation with baseball spilled over to collecting cards.
Packs of Tops baseball cards went for .05 cents.
If my memory serves me right, I believe there were 5 in a pack.
That is some simple math if you want to figure out how much it cost per card. But, for my good buddies @dandays and @puravidaville, just in case they are suffering from
A #fff victory celebration coma, I'll do the the math for them.
You get five cards per pack, if need be you can use your
you ÷ that 5 into the cost 5 and you get 1.
Now what can you buy with a penny these days.
Lost my train of thought,
focus, focus
On top of that you got a piece of Bazooka Bubblegum.
YOUNG and DUMP every way possible when it came to the baseball cards.
Trade-em
Flip-em
topsies in the milk box
Knock down
match or dismatch
distance tosses
And the most destructive 😢😢😢 attach to the spokes of your bike, what a cool flipping sound that would make.
Oh right, back to the paper.
Had to hodl the poor old girl open with some fruit I had just purchased.
Come to think of it, if I would have treated her a little bit more like a girl, she would have come out of storage looking much better.
The Big Sweed Sr. My only other hero. Enlisted at the age of 18 and served our country during WW11
In this photo, Mantle is met at home plate by Elston Howard who was the catcher for the Yankees. Mantle's contract that year was for a $100,000. Mantle would say later after hitting #500, that the pressure of hitting number 500 came from the constant attention he got from the media. He despised the idea that he was getting all the attention and that the media should have been focused on the team, and how the Yanks were doing.
Louis DeFillippo was the lucky young man who caught the ball.
He returned the ball to Mantle and was given an autographed bat in return.
That would never happen today, and if it did the price would have been much higher. $$$$$$$
Turning the pages with great care, the paper was filled with all kind of really cool stuff.
Here is an article about Roberto Clemente.
He played for the Pittsburg Pirates for 18 years.
He is also in the Hall of Fame.
Being from Puerto Rico, he faced discrimination because of his Latin descent
" He headed relief efforts in Puerto Rico after a massive earthquake hit Nicaragua in late December 1972. When Clemente received reports that the Nicaraguan army had stolen relief supplies meant for the people, he decided to accompany the next supply plane. Shortly after takeoff from the San Juan airport on December 31, 1972, the plane crashed, killing Clemente."

Today one award that is coveted by Major league baseball players is the Roberto Clemente Award.
This is a very special award that recognizes a player's contributions to society.
A somewhat strange fact is that Roberto Clemente got his 3,000 hit on the very last time he would step to the plate.

The Vietnam War was raging at this time, and would continue for another 8 years until the fall of Saigon on April 30th 1975.
Dick Tiger vs Jose Torres for second time, winning each bout.
In the 60s Tiger was considered one of the best fighters in the world.
The MRP of the Plymouth Fury was $3,118
Maybe I should have tried this years ago. NOT, BALD IS BEAUTIFUL. 😁😁😁
This news clip states that there is a need for an additional 5,000 Welfare workers. This would take the number of people being employed by the Welfare program from 22,000 up to 27,000 employees.
The additional workers were needed to handle the ever increasing work load.
It also states that the Welfare program is in a mess.
I wonder how many people are employed by this department today.
The Welfare program is still in a mess 41 years later!!
Even back then people needed to be hounded to come up with fiat that they owed.
This had to be good news, unless your Hemorrhoids were persistent.
Big Discovery
Would have helped this young gal.

Risque back in the Day.
Need a job. $10,000 would be equivalent to $75,000 today.
Check out some of the prices.
I can remember my mom collecting Plaid Stamps.
You would receive Plaid stamps depending on the amount of money you would spend in A & P.
The stamps were glued into a booklet, and once it was full you would redeem for a discount on future purchases.
Julie Andrews is probably best known for her role in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music.
The front Page of the Daily News on this date, was also Mother's day
Not knowing exactly what box this newspaper was stored in, for the past 40 years, can now be checked off.
I know what you're thinking, BUCKET LIST, back 9 yes, thinking about BUCKET LIST, NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Hope you enjoyed! thebigsweed
I really enjoyed this @thebigsweed. I was not expecting that baseball draft, I caught a real life curve ball by a real life major leaguer! Thanks a lot for the shout out, I look forward you articles, Sweed!
Curveball was not my best pitch, but the heater was. thanks for the reply .
Always Appreciated! Always humbled.
Howdy sir bigsweed! oh this is very interesting indeed! I really found all these items from this old paper interesting and the baseball article was super cool. You played pro ball? And if so, for how long?
Decided not to sign the contract offered by the Cardinals and opted to go to college instead. I was very young, 17 in my freshman year of college.
In talking the situation over with my dad, we decided that with being so young, if I did well in college my draft status would only increase.
That is exactly what happened, as I pitched for William Paterson University and recorded 6 wins with a single loss. things were going as planned.
I also played basketball for WPU and in my sophmore year I shattered my wrist playing basketball, and never was able to throw another pitch.
That's life.
oh wow! yes sir, such is life. man, well no use to think of what might have been. What happened, did you take a fall and come down on your wrist in basketball?
Interesting. 🤔 This article was listed in my mentions at steemworld.org but I clicked on it and it’s 10 months old.
I was like “nice, Sweed mentioned me!” But I think it’s just a repeat. “Booooo”
That’s really cool. I don’t even like baseball and yet I was thoroughly entertained. It’s amazing the stuff we forget that was so prevalent in our past. I like the baseball award for societal contributions too. Great post Sweed!
Thanks, Roberto Clemente was one heck of a baseball player. Following retirement, one of the rules for induction into the Hall of Fame is that a person can not be put on the Hall of Fame ballot until 5 years have passed since his retirement.
Following the crash that took his life, the Hall of Fame committee waived that rule and Roberto Clemente was instantly voted into this elite club.
The waving of the five year rule has only been lifted once, and that was for this unique person.
I like that they lifted it only for him. Sounds like an amazing player/man.
