China vowed Tuesday to speed up the development of its space industry as it set out its plans to become the first country to soft land a probe on the far side of the moon, around 2018, and launch its first Mars probe by 2020.

They probably will too. China is currently motivated to demonstrate its increasing technological ability, and to satisfy internal demand for growth and development projects. Developing a high level of space capability will help reduce brain drain, and enhance the prestige of China on the world stage. China has the ambition to be seen as a source of knowledge and progress, and to move beyond the cheap labour image it is now stereotyped with.
