PRESIDENT-ELECT JOE Biden will take the oath of office Wednesday in Washington, where 25,000 National Guard troops and thousands of other law enforcement personnel are patrolling the streets and guarding a perimeter that encompasses most of downtown due to threats of violent protests and other security risks in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob.

Statehouses across the country will be similarly swarming with National Guard members and police in preparation for the possibility of right-wing demonstrations by those who oppose Biden’s presidency or believe President Donald Trump’s baseless claims that the election was stolen from him.

It will be a tense start to the term of a president-elect who is expected to make unity his central inaugural message.

The agency also warned police chiefs across the country of possible attacks on state capitols, federal buildings and the homes of lawmakers, according to The New York Times.

Many states erected fences around their statehouses, boarded up buildings and mobilized state National Guard troops or additional law enforcement personnel in anticipation of potentially violent demonstrations on Sunday, but the protests turned out to be insignificant, subdued and ultimately peaceful. Small groups of demonstrators, including those armed with rifles and other firearms, did gather at statehouses in Michigan, Ohio, Oregon and elsewhere, but law enforcement members far outnumbered demonstrators.

A moderate crowd of pro-gun advocates, members of far-right extremist groups and others flocked to Richmond, Virginia, on Monday for the state’s annual Lobby Day. The demonstration, which occurred amid a heavy police presence, dissipated within a few hours, largely without incident.

Despite the feeble and anticlimactic protests over the weekend, states remain on high alert.

Capitol buildings will stay, or will be, boarded up, fenced off or otherwise barricaded. In some states, the buildings or the areas around them will remain closed to the public through Wednesday.
Lawmakers in Michigan and Oregon have already delayed legislative sessions scheduled for this week due to threats of violence and the possibility of protests. Both states have seen tense, armed and at times threatening demonstrations at their statehouses in the last year.

Potential demonstrators stand almost no chance of getting anywhere near the inauguration in Washington, which resembled something close to a war zone in the days leading up to Wednesday.

The National Park Service closed the National Mall through Thursday because of a “real and substantial threat of violence.” Authorities have also closed off huge swaths of downtown and the city is teeming with armed National Guard members who have been authorized to use lethal force if necessary.
