North Dakota Hospitals are at 100% Capacity

“North Dakota’s hospitals have reached their limit, and the coming weeks could push them past their capabilities, Gov. Doug Burgum said at a news conference yesterday,” reports the Grand Forks Herald. “Due to a major shortage of health care staffing, the state’s hospitals have a severe lack of available beds. Rising COVID-19 hospitalizations and high noncoronavirus admissions, some resulting from residents who deferred health care earlier in the pandemic, have caused the crunch on medical centers. Burgum said hospitals are implementing their ‘surge’ plans….Burgum said mask-wearing, social distancing and hand-washing are the most important actions North Dakotans can take to relieve some of the pressure on hospitals.”

“As new cases of COVID-19 and county positivity rates in Iowa have soared, a half-dozen schools and districts have received state waivers to hold all classes remotely for two weeks,” reports the Des Moines Register. “Two months into the academic year, school officials across Iowa are performing a balancing act, weighing whether local conditions pose enough of a threat to justify asking the state for permission to switch away from in-person classes. Some schools are facing increased numbers of students or employees who have tested positive for the coronavirus.”

Washington State Sets a New Record

“Washington set a new daily record for new coronavirus cases, with 1,777 new cases announced Saturday. That number tops the previous record of almost 1,500 new COVID cases reported in a single day, which was the most the state had reported in a single day since the start of the pandemic,” reports King 5. “The state Department of Health (DOH) warned that COVID-19 cases are spreading in the Puget Sound region. The update brings the state’s totals to more than 116,000 confirmed cases and 2,4319 deaths.”

“Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts on Monday announced additional public health measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the state, which has seen surging numbers in the past six weeks,” reports the Omaha World Herald. “Ricketts said masks must be worn at businesses when people are in close contact for at least 15 minutes.
