With more than 10 million total COVID cases so far in the United States, and nearly 240,000 deaths, reports from the ground are grim, and getting grimmer. “We are watching cases increase substantially in this country far beyond, I think, what most people ever thought could happen,” Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday. Osterholm is one of Joe Biden’s new coronavirus task force members, along with doctor and writer Dr. Atul Gawande and chair Dr. Vivek H. Murthy. “It will not surprise me if in the next weeks we see over 200,000 new cases a day,” he added. Hit hardest is the Midwest and the Great Plains, and the following states had more cases per capita in the last week than any others. “North Dakota’s hospitals have reached their limit, and the coming weeks could push them past their capabilities, Gov. Doug Burgum said at a news conference yesterday,” reports the Grand Forks Herald. “Due to a major shortage of health care staffing, the state’s hospitals have a severe lack of available beds. Rising COVID-19 hospitalizations and high noncoronavirus admissions, some resulting from residents who deferred health care earlier in the pandemic, have caused the crunch on medical centers. Burgum said hospitals are implementing their ‘surge’ plans….Burgum said mask-wearing, social distancing and hand-washing are the most important actions North Dakotans can take to relieve some of the pressure on hospitals.”

“With coronavirus cases running rampant in the Dakotas and elected leaders refusing to forcefully intervene, the burden of pushing people to take the virus seriously has increasingly been put on the families of those who have died,” reports the AP. “The ranks of those who know what it means to lose someone they love to COVID-19 are on the rise. North Dakota and South Dakota have the nation’s worst rate of deaths per capita over the last 30 days. Despite advances in treating COVID-19 patients, hundreds more people have died in recent weeks than during any other period — a grim exclamation point on the virus outbreak slamming the northern Plains and Upper Midwest.”

Some schools are facing increased numbers of students or employees who have tested positive for the coronavirus.”
