Scientists are developing a compact nuclear reactor for space colonies

in #news6 years ago (edited)

Modern science dreams of cosmic colonies. Sooner or later, Mars, the Moon and other planetary objects of our solar system will be inhabited by man. You can not doubt this.

Of course, many obstacles and problems stand in the way of implementing these plans: cosmic radiation, the likelihood of health problems in long space flights, the harsh environment, and the shortage of water and oxygen.

Energy will not only be needed to create conditions suitable for the colonists, but also for people to return to Earth as far as possible.

The advantage of nuclear energy over other sources is undeniable. First, it allows you to solve the problem of weight and reliability. Other energy sources require a large amount of fuel (which makes them heavy) or dependent on climatic and seasonal conditions.

In addition to NASA, the Glenn Research Center, the Marshall Space Center, the Y-12 National Security Center, as well as NASA contractors, SunPower and Advanced Cooling Technologies, are participating in the reactor development project.

Sort:

Better get space launches to go off without a single glitch or hiccup, Can't risk an explosion with nuclear material onboard, Would be very scary to see a sort of nuclear bomb going off in the atmosphere. Wonder if we'd be able to find fissionable material on those planets themselves though. In theory it shouldn't be too outlandish if that is the case.
